shit like this sickens me.. hiding the dirty truth accomplishes NOTHING!
so who the fuck is paying for all this anyway?

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/08/obama-denver.html

Last month The Ticket wrote that officials in Denver, worried about the impression that 50,000 visitors to the Democratic National Convention would get next week, were planning to hide the estimated 4,000 homeless people who hang around the city's downtown area.
They arranged for free movie passes and bingo games to get them off the street, as well as temporary housing and free tickets to the zoo and Museum of Nature and Science.
Now, with a Hat Tip to our pal Jeralyn over at TalkLeft, comes word, as Sen. Barack Obama prepares to announce his vice presidential running mate pick, that Denver is even spiffing up the coiffures of its homeless. They're giving free haircuts to the homeless this week in preparation for the visiting crowds who'll arrive this weekend.
    No, really.
According to Rick Sallinger of the CBS TV station, Denver Human Services has been handing out coupons for free homeless haircuts.
The idea was to make the homeless feel better about themselves. And maybe then they'd get jobs or something.(THIS STATEMENT PISSES ME THE FUCK OFF!!)
Rusty Johnson told Rick he hadn't had a haircut in three or four months and, frankly, didn't much care about the Democrats caring about his appearance. "I just want to look good and feel good for myself," he said.

    Just for balance:

The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless issued a statement...
insisting free movie tickets and bus tokens aren't being used to hide Denver's homeless during the Democratic National Convention...
The statement says the coalition has received commitments from the city, police and others that homeless people won't be pushed out during the DNC.
"They will not 'sweep' homeless people away or try to hide them, but will seek to engage them in the process," it says. "We'll carefully monitor security activities to ensure that the rights of all homeless individuals are protected."
The statement follows a story in the Rocky in which at least one volunteer who feeds the homeless said he suspected the free movie tickets were "another way to get rid of them."
B.J. Iacino, the coalition's director of education and advocacy, said the statement was issued because there's been "a great deal of confusion" about plans for the homeless during the convention.
"We wanted to emphasize that we will ensure that people are safe, cared for and engaged in convention activities should they choose to be," she said.
The coalition has requested tickets to the acceptance speech at Invesco Field, she said.
Rumors that the homeless will be given bus tokens to move them out of downtown are false, Iacino said. The homeless will be offered movie tickets, but not with the intent of hiding them, she said.
"If someone is looking for an escape from the heat or the activities of the convention or the security procedures, a small number of tickets to a centrally located theater will be made available," she said.
"This isn't unusual," she added. "The whole homeless provider community routinely offers access to public events for people experiencing" homelessness

i find it ridiculous even if it is a common practice(which i highly doubt).. the monies could be better spent on things like bus tokens to get to possible jobs, job training, as well as housing.
and the statement that, "The idea was to make the homeless feel better about themselves. And maybe then they'd get jobs or something." is fucking insulting any way you slice it.

if youll notice,,the "small number of movie tickets",is now a laundry list of freebies..

if you believe that all this becoming available during the convention is coincidence i got some ocean front property 50 miles south of denver i will sell you at a good fair price...

The other article seems more realistic.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/07/democratic-co-1.html

Do you know what, they probably do.
Have just been to their websites, they seem to do a fair bit.
Denver Human Services, are even addressing the needs of the homeless at the conference.

    http://www.coloradocoalition.org/site/PageServer?pagename=programs

    http://www.denvergov.org/Portals/373/documents/DDHSStrategicPlanandAddendum_7-08.pdf

    I find it insulting also.
    But, who said it?
It looks like the reporter...(who could be a Republican ;)).
It seems horribly insensitive if someone from Denver Human Resources or
The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless said that, but I doubt they did.

It seems The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless WANT the homeless to be around (if they want to be). But are giving them the means to not be around (for reasons in the first link). I'd personaly snap it up.

I do think it is a short term measure during that chaotic time.
    So there is no coincidence.
I'm not 100% sure about the haircuts, that could be for people who want to go to the DNC but want to smarten up...but info on that is scarce..
    It could infact be bollocks.

I say this story is a storm in a T-cup.

oh im sure denver as a hole is a homeless friendly town,i know it was 25 years ago when i spent time on the streets there.
its just this is pretty common place in the states, that is to say to try and hide the homeless population anytime there is a large event in a major city. they even do it for the superbowl so i have little doubt there are extra measures being made in denver for the convention..

i find it degrading and insulting to the homeless.. there human beings who may or may not be able to help the situation there in,but the fact remains they are there, they shouldnt be swept under the rug or cleaned up simply because a convention comes to town.
if they can provide the extra rescources and come up with funding for events like this then they should do the same all year round..

I'm sure it is, and I am sure there are extra measures (It seems blatantly obvious).
But I do think you are being slightly knee jerk here.
What more do you want?: The Needs of the homeless are going to be discussed at the DNC (you can even drop Denver Human Services an email with some suggestions). The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless want the homeless to participate. And have seeked assurances from the police they will not be moved on. Some stuff is being organised for reasons in my first link and: “We asked some of the homeless what they wanted during this time and they said, ‘If there’s a party, we want to be a part of the party. We want bingo.”

    Well, we shall see.
I personaly am heartened by this:
Alternatively, there will also be opportunities for the homeless to get involved in the convention activities. Several shelters plan on broadcasting parts of it live for curious patrons. And Iacino’s organization will be launching a voter registration drive.

If there were a whif of the homeless being "swept under the rug" I'd be pissed off. My friend: http://www.bbc.co.uk/nohome/ (single woman) was homeless and on the streets for (I think) 6 months. So I am not attempting to make excuses for them. I'm just not seeing what you are seeing here.

all i can say is you have far more faith in the system and law enforcement and peoples word than i as one whom was homeless for 7 years do..
i lived it,i think i have a pretty good grasp as to how they will be treated.
no matter what you dig up in the media and feel compelled to believe..

its not worth it.. i know your pattern, its predictable and its quite frankly sad to see someone of your intelligence level having so much faith in the system..
i actually question whether your being paid to spew your crap because i dont see how anyone at your age, with your intelligence level could actually buy into the crap that you seem to.
if i wanted to read the typical responses you give id only need to pick up a newspaper,or better yet i could turn on the TV and just listen to it.. ;)

Not to be rude, but have you ever thought sometimes you are wrong?
I don't have as much faith in the "sytem" as you may think.
But, neither can I extrapolate someting out of nothing.
Which is what you are attempting to do.

To be rude, I know your pattern, it's predictable.
But I atleast take the time to see if what you are saying has merit.
If you don't think what I am saying has any merit.
Don't reply to me, simple as that.
I won't be offended, honest .

Lap up the responses that agree with you.
Go to bed with a big grin on your face, thinking your version of reality is the correct one.

You would not hear what I am saying in the newspapers or TV.
It would be the same as what you are infering and the article is.
They are as cynical as you are.;)

i generally reply to posts directed towards me,, so you could solve that problem by spewing your rhetoric elsewhere in the future.. ;)

his intelligence level? that was a open ended statement left to your own interpretation... :)

oh and i could give a flip flyin fuck less whether anyone agrees with me..
ive been on these forums for 10 years or so now and as any long time member can attest,i aint here to be in no popularity contest..
so lap that up on your way to bed... ;)
