Thought I'd throw off my string of threads trying to get people naked, and ask what everyone thought of the death penalty.

I'm completly morally opposed. It violates the whole reason we have laws, which is to protect society. Murdering people doesn't protect anyone. It's vengance, and shouldn't be carried out by the state.

Prison seems like a much harsher punishment as it is. Yet I guess that death must suck.

Am I morally opposed to it? Ehh, slightly.

But honestly... very few people get executed every year, and it's usually for a pretty damn serious crime. The death penalty serves a great purpose at illustrating that. Some people need to know that the death penalty is there... it might stop them from killing someone.

i think the whole "justice" system is fucked up
i remember debating this in highschool, i brought up this point and i won the debate
texas has the most people put to death by the death penalty in america, it also has the highest crime rate

although i'm thinking i bullshited that point, and i have no idea weather or not it's true

in canada a man was released from prison recently(although it probably wasn't that recent), last couple of years i think
he bombed a plane and killed a couple hundred people, he got like a 5 yr sentence or some shit
i think it averaged out to be 1/2 days in prison for every person he killed

    that's just fucking retarded

i'm not for capital punishment, but i am for a more proportionate sentence structure
to get life imprisonment in america for selling weed is just fucking retarded

Since almost all murders are either crimes of passion or of circumstance, I doubt it. The fact that murder rates aren't higher in places without the death penalty makes that point moot.

And we have released over 100 people from death row who DNA evidence showed were innocent. That's the best reason I've ever heard for abolishing it. If we've ever as a society murdered an innocent person because we thought the evidence was good enough. Then the whole society's copeable.

And one day, it'll be shown to have happened. It's likely happened more then once a decade.

    Ohh please.

Like anyone is going to buy that for a minute. I'm sure ANYONE would rather have the Death Penalty than life in prison, if they're going to kill someone, a quick and painless death isn't going to stop them.

It is something I oppose 100%.
Who are we to do so with life as we choose? We already have warfare going on, and to continue it legally in our own country is absurd, down with the Death Penalty.

    death penalty - oppose

    gun rights - support

and i don't think the death penalty works as a deterrent, otherwise Texas wouldn't have to keep killing inmates, they'd get the picture after the first couple times, right?

I support the death penalty when cold blooded killers are proven to have done the crime...

i do not like the racial component that goes with it, and it should be reserved for the worst types of murder..home invasions, random shootings, people that kidnap and murder women, kids, anyone.

If its a crime of passion and can be shown the person was driven to it by circumstance, then no

pro-vengeance, anti-death penalty. man, you know how many people were executed that were likely innocent? and do YOU want to live next door to an executioner? i couldn't care less if a filthy monster is put the fuck down (i'm feral) BUT i don't think state sanctioned murder is all that great for society anyway.

The point is that we do have DNA evidence now, and there's much less of a chance of an innocent dying.

...and as I said. Very few people get executes. I think that it's a great means of population control.

You underestimate how much people like to live. No one (other than possibly you) sees death as the right answer. People don't like to die. Dying is probably the last thing people like to do.

There are lots of murder cases where they don't have convienent blood to do DNA tests with Pavel. Life isn't like CSI and not every killer is nice enough to masturbate at the scene of the crime.

    I do it when I loiter. :D

Yeah, sure... yet DNA is not always necessary.

But you have to have at least some trust in the justice system, or encourage complete reform. Don't get stuck in the middle.

well there was a guy here who met an 18 year old girl on one of those chat lines, murdered her on the spot when they met..they have DNA evidence among other things...whammo death sentence bye

there were these two guys in northern california who kidnapped women, kept them in an underground bunker and raped and killed them, one was caught and killed himself with a cyanide tablet, the other escaped to Canada where he stays in jail...

I just think the fucker should die

Beyond whether it is morally or ethically correct to have a death penalty, I don't think any government is trustworthy enough to be given the right to be able to legally kill people.

There also several other crimes besides murder that can be given the death penalty in various states - like treason/espionage, train-wrecking, high-level drug trafficking (even for Marijuana), aggravated kidnapping, airplane hijacking, etc.

There are several people which may have wrongfully executed. Link -

If you scroll down and read through some of the cases.

I don't trust the justice system to decide if someone deserves to live or die. So my complete reform is a constitutional amendment outlawing the death penalty.

We should have another australia to send all the murderers and let them kill eachother. Or just make another coliseum.
