just got an email from my dad on the west coast. he's published another book! this is great - he hasn't published anything in a long time. i didn't even know he was still writing. the book is about his friend and neighbor. http://www.llumina.com/store/thewindingroad.htm my dad and his neighbor Ung Ho Chang have started an enterprise together, manufacturing an upscale version of a korean game called Yut Nori, with a canvas board, glass markers and a wooden case. He sent a prototype for the kids to play with. i'm trying to get him to send me a demo of the new edition so i can sell it in my shop. some of the shops here in rochester have expressed interest in carrying it too. i'm excited about this because my dad's been retired for years, and he was really depressed after mom died. i'm really proud of him, and grateful for his friendship with Mr. Chang, because in the past he's spiraled downwards into depression, but now he's active, happy and interested in things. dad and i have had a lot of tension in the past. in a way having a continent between us has brought us closer, but i'm really excited to see him healing himself through projects like this book and the game.
i was in a bit of a foul mood until i checked my email. it's awesome to see him so happy and active. i was really afraid he was going to come apart completely after mom died.
thanks! i'm not sure how much biography he's written before, so this will be interesting to read. he used to be a very good technical writer (mainly electronics, ham radio, theatrical lighting & sound, etc.), but for some reason never considered it "real" writing because it wasn't a novel or something. i'll be he writes great biography though, because it's non-fiction, which i know he's good at, and people-centered, which i think he's just finding out is what he's interested in. i hope he's finally found his niche!
thanks, matt. yeah, he is. i'm happy he's finally using those talents and recognzing them. biography! it's so perfect for him! i wonder why he never wrote biography before? i hope he writes something about my grandparents. or better yet, tells his own story. the tales he used to entertain us with about his antics as a kid in south boston during WWII were really lively. he has a real skill for telling funny, vivid stories about people. he used to make these kids from the slums of boston he grew up with sound as alive as the kids next door. mostly, though, i'm glad he's not depressed any more. i don't think i've ever seen him so happy my whole life, actually.
I wish I could write. There is some talent in my family for that, a great uncle that was very well known for writing and drawing for books and magazines and such that has awards and even a movie was based on his works. I have another relative that is a musician. My daughter can write book after book but thus far she is afraid to try to submit any, lol Me, shit I cant do it, Im just not creative. Congrats to the ol man and I hope he does very well as well as you getting some for your little market too. Could ask ol dad to sign a few, a little extra edge??
