    could i cut my san p im half and just put it im the soil sticking straight up. there is a pup on to p thats y i want to plant its rightside up

    Yes thats the general idea. I suggest you do some reading into cultivating cacti- to find out how deep to plant it, what soil type and season are best etc

    should i leave the fresh parts alone?

    You have to let the cut part dry and get hard, like a callous, which is what it's called, I think. Then you can start the fairly long process of rooting. Unless you live in southern Cali or similar place, it may be a little late in the year to start the process.
