    Europe is cultured, America isn't.

    Do you know any others?

Oh America is cultured alright. Don't let MTV fool you. You just have to dig a little deeper.

I think one difference could be the extreme differences of culture from one state to the next. Whereas all across Europe you won't notice quite as drastic of differences.

(I have never been to Europe, I'm talking from conversations I've had with Europeans and other travelers.)

    Awesome, we are both generalizing.
Another cultural difference would be that Europeans have freedom and Americans have hamburgers.

    America definitely has culture.

And when you jump border to border in Europe, it's kinda hard to not notice the differences. Ie. Language, currency, architectural structures, food etc

It'd be much easier to notice nothing state to state. All the American states speak the same language, you all have the same fast food chains statewide, your sports rarely differ etc.

Maybe I was looking at things wrong. Or maybe it's just another way to look at it.

For example: Put yourself in the deep swamp of Louisiana. Now put yourself in Miami. They are relatively close in proximity, but try getting by using the language and mannerisms from Miami in the deep swamp of Louisiana. It might as well be an entirely different planet. Whereas (and I'm assuming here) someone could go from one end of Europe to the other and get by ok without changing the way they do things.

Well, after typing that I think I realized that maybe the biggest difference is the ACCEPTENCE of cultures different than their own.

Well if you look at it that way then East and West Germany are different cultures too, in which they are, their way of life and language change a lot. The East is traditionally more arrogant but down here in Bavaria, well, we are just a different class of our own too >.>

North/South Poland are different as is West and East. I always find Austria to be pretty neutral but folk have their ways up in the alps.

North and South Italy are different (from what I have heard)

Even the road rules are different from country to country. Some countries I've been to if you weren't wearing a fluro vest when outside the car on a highway = jail. Some countries you need your lights on during the day even if it's bright sunshine. Big fines if you don't.

Then there's alcoholic tolerances. In Germany we sell beer in news stands on the streets. In Austria we serve beer at KFC. Can't find an ATM? Nevermind, there's a ratio of 5:1 cigarette machines.

Then you have your environmental factors. Most of Germany is really clean. Hell München in my eyes is crystal clean. The only problem being the bikes people lay around and with that, it's just a general rule in München itself that you pick up a bike and leave it when you get to your destination. Nobody steals bikes, it's all very respected. Bikes aren't damaged on the streets or tyres let down. I've been to some cities where a bike wouldn't last 5 seconds on the street >.>

With all due respect, but the main focus of this thread is to pinpoint the cultural differences between Europe and America, not the cultural differences within Europe.

Oh I was never going anywhere. Just trying to bet cute ;)

I know there are parts of Eastern Europe that aren't too friendly, but I've always been led to believe that, for the most part, peaple in Europe are much more open and inviting to the different cultures surrounding them than the States. It's why kids in art school are always dreaming of moving to Europe.

Though on the other hand, most American cities you will find a mix of different cultures from all over the world. Often blended in ways that are beautiful and ways that are grotesque. It's in the rural places of America that you will find better examples of the cultural differences. I envision European cities to be more clearly distinctive. Am I wrong there?

Sorry to put you back on your place again, but some European cities are very culturally diverse, while others are more distinctive. Especially in the Western European countries there is a gigantic cultural diversity.

Yes, it is allowed to help a fellow Hipforist understanding cultural implications. It is encouraged even. :2thumbsup:

Are you saying America is not a continent?
Why are you spreading misinformation in this thread?
