How bad is crochetting your dreads, really?

I tried to quantify damage resulting from crocheting and came up with a dreadlock damage coefficient of 2.74, but this was based on a tiny dataset and the real answer could be an order of magnitude greater.

So you do think it is bad? I was a tad bit confused by your reply. I'm only wondering becuase I started my dreadlocks a bit over a month ago with backcomb/crochet and have only crocheted them once or twice since, but I have had 3 dreads for 3 months and crocheted those ones as well and they seem to be doing just fine and they don't look all woven and what not.

My answer was a bunch of sarcastic nonsense intended to illustrate that your never going to get a definitive answer to such a subjective question.

It depends on how good you are at it :) I do mine every other month to tidy them up and mine are fine, just don't over do it

Thanks. :) I don't over do it either. I just do it a little. And I didn't do it as much as most when I first got them done. Your reply was actually quite helpful.

When I crocheted, I hated it. They fell out and looked really fake. I took a crocheted dread out and my hair was pretty damaged (I think I over did it. I was new ahaha.) Just don't over do it and you'll be fine! Do what makes you happy.

i crocheted my dreads a lot before i combed them out, and they were really dry. after combing it looked kind of damaged but it really wasn't as bad as i thought it would be - all the damage was in the tips.

i'm crocheting this set now but plan on cutting back a lot once they mature. i think moderation is the key, especially in the long run.

I crochet mine sometimes to keep them neat for work.
For me, the benefits outweigh the damages.

(Not giving it the benefit of the doubt, I'm not aware of any damage but obviously it must be damaging to some extent)

If my dreads all fall off then I'll stand corrected, but I know I'll cut my dreads off eventually, and my hair is normally short, so it doesn't bother me

Crochetting May Well Work With Course Hair, But When It Comes To Fine Hair

It Breaks So Easily, So Repeated Crochetting Will Most Certainly Damage The Base

Of The Dread To The Point It Will Eventually Break Away...:(.

    Cheers Glen.

with all due respect to the original poster, you've only had your "dreads" for a month. it may take a while before you notice the weird texture, breakage, damage, etc.

i sense a mutany ... crocheting used to mean bad things around these parts; very bad things

    D

PS. I have a crochet hook that i use to clean gunk out of my pipe ... works really well

my boyfriend jacks my hooks all the time for this... they're not just for my hair though i genuinely crochet a lot.

and from what i've observed around here the past few weeks it's still 'bad things around these parts'. i get the hate on wax (or at least prolonged waxing) but fail to understand the hate on crocheting... worldpeace's dreads anyone? http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=321470&highlight=timeline&f=209

she broke so many "rules" and ended up with possibly my favorite dreads on here.

My dreads are almost 9 months old and I only crocheted twice. I'm going to do it again this weekend with a friend of mine. I think it's ok so long as you don't overdo it. However, it's not necessary. If you don't touch them (crocheting or palmrolling or anything like that) they'll still come out beautiful. :)

I wouldn't crochet them at 3 months though. They're still a bit young and need to mature first. 6 or 7 months maybe is when you should start, if you decide to do it at all.

    *hugs*

being a bit of a newb, now i am confused!! :blush5: sorry for my naiveté.... i am getting my head around crocheting to create and crocheting to maintain... (mine were crocheted to create, which was after backcombing). i am curious now about crocheting to maintain... at 6 to 7 months, do you crochet the roots, or the whole dread? and after 6 to 7 months, what is there to crochet? mine are kinda tight already, so i don't understand how crocheting would be of any benefit, other than sicking a needle in and out and creating holes. please correct me if i'm wrong...

is it possible to get a pic of these?? :)
