I was doing some research on being vegan trying to see if I wanted to change to being vegan or remain vegetarian and surfing the internet led me to articles about cosmetic testing on animals. I don't use any cosmetics. What's the point? It's all superficial, just hiding who the real person really is. Why make products to make us all look the same? And through the articles I read...I can barely believe they are treating animals so horribly for something so not needed. I mean, as far as medical testing goes, I can see their side. We have come up with some wonderful cures by testing on animals. I hope that doesn't make me sound horrible, but if you look at in the sense that through a few rats dying we save thousands or maybe millions of lives...basically I'm putting things in perspective. But testing cosmetics on animals to see how the chemicals react if it gets in someone's eyes...is just cruel. We don't even need cosmetics! Here's just a couple of things I found:

A couple of tests performed are (these tests are banned in some areas of the world, but unforetunately still used in many places):

Not all cosmetic companies do this of course, because there are alternatives such as:

If you do use cosemetics this website has a list of the cosmetic companies that test on animals (you may be surprised at some of the companies that are on the list, such as 3M, Oral-B, Johnson-and-Johnson, and Gillette (for those of you using duracell batteries):

    http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/2062/dotest.html

And if any of you are using any of those companies and want to switch to using a company that isn't so cruel to animals, here's a list of those that don't test on animals:

    http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/2062/donttest.html

and here's another list of companies that don't test on animals:

    http://www.noahonline.org/english/nottest.htm

Well, there's a bit of what I've found. I knew there were some companies that tested on animals, but I didn't realize how harshly the animals were being treated and how many companies (some of which I had been using :() were involved.

I'm really glad you posted this. Hopefully it will open the eyes of the many blind who are in denial about this reality. I am completely against animal testing of any kind. It does more harm than good. I belive in human testing, ESPECIALLY for cosmetic testing. I totally agree that cosmetics are a completely unneeded aspect of life and that if you want to wear it you should offer yourself up for testing or buy from companies that don't test on animals. I know people are going to call me a Nazi for believing in human testing( I don't give a shit as I'm not one).. but my question to them is this: If it's immoral and inhumane and cruel and unusual punishment to test on humans than why is it okay to test one aniamls? That statement in itself admits the fact that scientific experimentation is a painful thing to endure. It has nothing to do with the level of interpreted intelligence either. It has to do with the fact that animals are sentient beings capable of feeling just as much as we are. We have no business using them for our needs like that. Human cells offer more possibilities for finding cures for things than using an animal of a totally different genetic code. It's so very simple yet people have to make sure they can have what they want without having to suffer for it. Hell.. most of the time they wouldn't have to use whole humans, just our cells and tissue. Anyway that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Thanks again for your education and links Dandelion!

I'm against animal testing too. Have been even before going veggie.

My reasoning usually involves Branwen (see sig). If anyone treated her like that A) She would suffer just as much a human would
    and
    B) They would be arrested
So why suppourt companies who treat her fellow creatures in such appaling ways.

Cosmetic testing pisses me off the most, as you say it's completely pointless. I'm not keen on using them for medical reasearch eithier. Those experiements are so inaccurate and most are pointless anyway.

Here's another helpful resource. Go to www.navs.org and type in a produict or company name, and they will tell you whether or not the product is tested on animals.

Animal testing is disgusting. Why harm and\or kill a beautiful living creature just so people can put shit on their face to look pretty? That is beyond horrible. I'd rather save one rabbit or rat than all the fucking lipstick in the world: I am above exploiting a living creature for superficiality.
