Well since im about to graduate from highschool january 18th ive decided to ethier backpack around the U.S. or join a commune and try to become self sufficent in the wilderness, but right now im wondering which i should do. So i thought id ask you guys for help and any advice you can give me. A couple problems i have is that the only real outdoors expierence ive had is with the boyscouts, i only have a couple hundred dollars saved up, and i wont turn 18 untill july 25. I really want to leave soon instead of waiting until my birthday due to problems with my family, but im wondering if that would cause to many problems and possible get me in trouble with the law if i got picked up by the cops out backpacking or whatever. any help or advice would be great feel free to pm me :)

embarking on your journey is never the way you imagined it. my advice to you is to know that not everybody is who they pretend to be, be skeptical without being cynical. learn to see with your heart because your mind can be fooled. Learn to trust the universe. Don't be afraid to eat out of the dumpster. Know the bad times are not permanant and neither are the good but it's all part of the ride. Good luck to you little brother, I hope you find what yer lookin for

Good luck! I wish you lots of love and happiness. :) I too started traveling and doing my own thing young... I was hitching/driving/walking/traveling around the Pacific Northwest starting around 14-15. I embarked on my first cross-country hitch when I was 17. Probably the best piece of advice I could give, all-around, is don't rush anywhere. Even if you have a destination in mind. The adventure is in the trip, and you wanna stretch that out as much as you can. I swear I turned down way more rides than I ever took, and probably walked at least half the distance that first time from the WC to NY state. But I saw and smelled every bit along the way. Nothing got past me and I wrote it all down. And getting anywhere a week or a month or a year sooner could never make up for that. :)
