First, some backround: I recently (three months or so ago) adopted a pug-mix (pretty close to a standard pug, but a little bigger and darker colored). Winter is coming around, and because he's pretty small and very short haired, i think he may need some clothing when the temperatures drop into the teens. so, do any of you have any thoughts or experiences in dressing dogs? how did you go about it? how does the dog react (he seems to hate having something on him)? any reasons not to? think, talk, discuss.
When I used to live in Finland and had my first dog I'd make him wear a little doggy coat when it got very cold. He didn't like it at first but got used to it very quickly so it wasn't really a problem. In England the temperature never seems to drop that low but my boyfriend's mother still insisted on buying a coat for Rosie. Admittedly, Rosie has short hair but she never seems cold outside and she absolutely hates her coat. There's a pic of her in my gallery, wearing the coat and looking all sulky, hahah. I might make her wear it (or buy her another one because the one she has now isn't waterproof (or muddy proof!!)) if the weather gets a lot colder and she looks like she's cold. We'll see. Generally though, I do think dog coats are great, especially for little ones like pugs coz they're so close to the cold ground. Just keep an eye on your dog and if he looks like he's shivering a lot then get him a nice little coat to keep him warm. Also, make sure the outside of the coat is waterproof because otherwise it'll get wet in the snow and make your doggy even colder!
my big dog absolutly loves wearing clothing of any kind but he doesnt need it, his coat is warm enough. my little dog is a terrier and his fur is thin. he get really cold when hes wet and its windy and cold so i make him wear a sweater or coat. he gets kinda sad when i put it on him but once were outside he forgets about it. if your dog doesnt like it, give him lots of attention and love and treats when you put it on so that he thinks of it as a positive thing.

they hate it when you put it on them lol, i think its cute having to get their little leggies in. but yea a coat for sure. one of my dogs have a weather proof coat with wool on the inside, its cute.
It depends on the dog. One of my dogs gets excited and happy when you put her coat on her (but only her coat, she hates sweaters) and then is calm and snoozes in it. Every other dog I've had has either tolerated or hated clothes. There is an aging 3 pound chihuahua with bad arthritis in the family, a sweater is put on her when she goes outside to do her thing to try to keep the pain in her joints down since she is too frail for medications for it.
I have several sweaters, a hooded sweatshirt and a waterproof insulated cape for my Emma pup, who is a 15 pound Rat Terrier. Of the three types, her favorites are the sweaters, since they fit more snuggly than the sweatshirt, yet she really loves her cape since it fits over the top of her body leaving her belly somewhat exposed and more freedom of motion. If you do purchase any of these, I would go with a slightly larger size, since they are all notorious for shrinking and then being too tight on their body. Also, I took her to the pet stores with me to try them on prior to my buying any of them, which is a lesson I learned the hard way. Good luck to you and especially your little dog too!
My dog Merlin has three different types of coats--he's got a lightweight jacket for cooler Spring and Fall days, a parka for Winter and a rain coat for when we have to go out in the rain--and he likes to wear them--plus, he also has a black thermal T-shirt that has the Tasmanian Devil (Taz) on it! He usually wears the shirt when it gets super-cold, and he doesn't mind it at all! I'm also thinking of getting him a set of boots so I won't have to worry about him freezing his pads when we go for a walk on cold or snowy days--and maybe another set to go with his raincoat!
