The American Civil War was full of soldiers who wore long hair, had long beards, and lived on the land. They were dirty, and they rarely took baths. They drank and smoked and wooped it up. Only thing is they fought one hell of a bloody war. More people died in that war than all the Americans who died in WW1 and WW2 combined. The South is still ringing in the ears over the last cannon shots. Down South today, about 150 years later. people are fighting over the rebel flag; whether it can be flown or not. I think yes, what do you all think?

    Yes. I've heard that one!!
I live in Charleston, SC. As a matter of fact, I live 5 mi. from where the first shots were, well, shot.

I could really give a rats ass if the flag is flown or not. As a historian, there is a good reason. But there are too many people that are for lac of a better term, hyper-sensitive

Anyone know the REAL reason Fance and England didn't intervene on behalf of the Confederacy?

It's a running joke in the south, like.....

"The Civil War?? You mean when the North invaded the South?"

If you look at it in a historical perspective, both sides were just as bad as the other for their own reasons

Damn the "Tariff of Abominations"!!!! Huzzah the nullification of '32.

I think the build up to the war is more interesting than the war itself. :)

Unfortunately, some people who fly the rebel flag are ignorant of the principles on which the South made a stand, and those are the people who give the flag a bad connotation. However, I believe people should have the freedom to display it as a symbol of southern heritage. After all, the civil war was not fought solely over the issue of racism, how then can the flag be reduced to only one issue?

The Confederate Flag never flew over a slave ship, the American flag flew over for over a century. How is it the American flag isn't racist?
Massachusetts was the first state to legalize slavery how is their flag not racist?

The south fired the first shot in South Carolina, why would the Union army be there to start with?

The civil war is a fascinating subject to me. I hate it is always dumbed down to the slavery issue, it was much bigger than that.

they didn't have to. The south thought that europe would come and help them because they needed the cotton that was coming from the south for their cloth. But little did the south know but Europe got new of/suspected the war and bought in bulk and started rationing. That and they also found other sources to get cotton from. Thats part of the reason.

Yeah, but considering the fact that both sides comprised of Americans, this isn't a really suprising statistic.

Ft. Sumter was initially built after the War of 1812....before Union vs. Conferderacy.....but was never finished.

A few days after SC seceded, a Union army major left Ft. Moultrie (on Sullivans Island) because of its poor defenses and, without permission from Washington, moved his men to Ft. Sumter. It was when the Union tried to ship supplies to Ft. Sumter when the first shots were fired...the Lincoln sent a fleet down here, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I live right in Charleston, so I have heard these stories about the Civil War for as long as I can remember

plus the undermining issue here is freedom of speech protected in the 1st amendment. you can fly any flag you want. i mean just look at some of the signs the Phelps hold up, those are more offending than any flag.

I'm sure all the stories were told with no bias whatsoever. Without permission please. He was in fact ordered to Ft. Sumter The fact is the South fired the first shot in aggression NOT is self defense therefore THEY started it.
