cigarette buts

This is a question i guess for the smoker's in the house.

I've been noticing a lot lately how annoying it is to see someone drop their cigarette butts on the ground, without even thinking about it. Especially if they don't stamp it out. I think it's just one of the most inconsiderate things a person can do! But i'm too reserved to go up to someone and confront them about it. So what do u think I should do? What's the most polite way to tell someone they're a dickhead who's contributing to making the world a smelly shithole? If someone approached you about it would you be offended or willing to learn? Or is there something useful you can do with cigarette butts? like i once heard you can use the leftover tobaccy for weed killer....?? any suggestions would be appreciated!!

 

Forgive me, but, What EXACTLY is the question?

The Filtered kind, the Filter itself is Harmful to the Earth. (Manmade shit usually is!) But, the Paper, and the tobacco, contain plant parts, that can and will be re-absorbed by the Earth.

 

yeah i mean the filter mostly. but the stuff in packaged ciggies has stuff that isn't plant based in it too which is not biodegradable (or so i believe). besides, it looks gross! and in australia there's a real bush-fire risk from people who throw lit cigarette butts on the ground.

 

That was fast! Like I said. Manmade stuff usually DOES harm the Earth. While I don't know, you might, those Brushfires could have been cause by almost anything. Including some dipshit who threw a cigarrette out of his/her car window. OR! Lightning. I frown upon littering. Which is at LEAST what that smoker is doing. (I'm a smoker, myself. I know!)

Maybe you could politely point THAT out?

this is something that bugs me intensly!! i mean how much hasstle is it to a) put your fag out and b) put it in a bin once it is out?!

As a barefooter i dread walking in crouds incase of cigarretes on the floor. Ive never stood on one but at a rave a few weeks back i kneeld down outside and because it was so dark and cramped didnt check the floor and ended up kneeling on a lit cigarete!
Also is people who smoke forget that when the blow out their smoke it goes off into someone else face!! EUGH! its impossible to go anywhere in london without this happening.. and i understand thats not down to them but EGUGH!!
What IS down to them though is HOLDING the thing in your face.. the dont bother to look where there hands are when they hold a fag, be it up over their shoulder (into your face) or down out to the side (into your arm) now if people want to smoke, fine do it, just i wish they'd avoid doing it in tight crouds of people. The worst one is at festivals and gigs in the pits, and in the croud when you are all squished super tight...then the person next to you wiggles abit and pulls out a fag, i spend the next few minuits praying for the life of my dreadlocks :S

 

Obviously, throwing a cigarette butt with a filter on the ground is littering. The filter itself, as someone already mentioned, is not biodegradable. The tobacco, even if it isn't organically grown, and the paper surrounding the tobacco, is.
Non-filtered cigarettes are environmentally friendly. There may be other substances used in the germination process of tobacco (particularly those that aren't organic) but their no different then those substances used in corporate agriculture processes.
If you bought a banana from a non-organic grocery store and threw the peel on the ground, by the "cigarette logic" you would be littering. I'm not an expert, but I'm fairly certain that's not the case.

I hate it when someone whips their cig but out the window. I like to ride motorcycle to save on gas and I hate it when someone whips their still burning fag out the window.

Some smokers are just assholes about it> that isn't news. At festivals, events etc. it's impossible and useless to try and effect the occurance at all.
however, the real pisser that gets me, is when some punk is only a few feet away from a trashbin and instead flicks it just near the perimeter. Not often, but when it is so 'assoholic', I've picked up the butt, said 'Hey buddy, do me a favor and pick up after yourself next time.'
Once, a guy talked back--- he didn't like what i has to sayand that is fine, If I smoked ciggs I wouldn't want random people prohibiting me, but I didn't hinder him, and to not say my two cents would be a hindrance of me....
It's only happened 2-3 times, more if I were more confrontational!!!!
But when I ride with a person, or friend that smokes, and they throw a butt out the window, GRRRRR! I have friends that know that butts go in trays, that go in trash!

And I agree with ,, well I've forgotten who wrote it but.. anyway> I dislike when smokers disregard others around them and blow smoke(and this goes for any kind : ) any which way. Esp. at a festival, I guess some folks just haven't learned to kiss the sky. I 've gotten use to having smoke around, I just don't don't appreciate others deciding when I'm to be 'exposed'.

 

I smoke, but alot of smokers are really fucking annoying when it comes to stuff like that. Like they'll hold the cig away, to keep the smoke out of their eyes, and ash off their pants. While they're doing this though, they're shoving the smoke in your face. People are damn inconsiderate.

 

Here in PA you can still smoke in alot of restaraunts,stores,etc..I don't much give a shit who likes the smoke & who doesn't,but one thing I did learn from coming here was the fact that I was polluting by flicking my butts wherever.It was just what everybody has always done,& it never even crossed my mind.I now roll my own using natural tobacco without filters,so I dont worry about flickin my shit anymore.A friend stayed with me the other week tho,& he smokes those cigars with the plastic tips.Damn I hate those things,they shouldnt even be legal

 

My friends and I haven't littered our cigarette butts for a few years now. Everyone in our circle seems to do what they can to help out the Earth, to us, this is only common sense. I've picked them up plenty of times when others just gave them a toss. Laziness creates a lot of litter. But it is nice that places such as a workplace can help compensate by buying those cigarette butt containers for the smoking areas, although some people are still too lazy to use those, it's nice to see them around.

 

thanks Piscean for letting us know there are at least some considerate smokers out there. i hate that fact that everywhere you look theres cigarette butts littered around. the worst is when your enjoying a nice day at the beach only to find to have a cig butt stuck between your toes. ICKY!!

 

Way back when I used to smoke, I wouldn't think twice about throwing my butt out the car window - or on the floor at a show. I think it's part of the whole addict mentality.

Now I can see how disgusting it really is. It smells and it poisons the smoker and those around them. I'm currently watching a good friend kill herself with smokes. When she has her coughing fits, I don't ask anymore if she's alright -- because we both know she's not. The doctor told her she had to stop, but she just can't / won't do it. Now it's just a matter of time.

 

People heckle me all the time about throwing my butts on the ground, excuse me but that is so stupid. The real thing is that it's going to end up in a landfill anyway, the only real problem you seem to have with it is that you're going to see it, if you don't see it, do you still have a problem with it?

 

landfills are a shitty fact of life, yes, but I'd rather see it end up there than all over the countryside.

 

That seems to be the path I'm on these days. Quitting. Rather, making the decision to. All I ask GOD in return, is to keep our Earth, GREEN.

So your concern is not with the environment, but just with the fact that you don't like to look at trash right?

 

I put all of my butts in a pocket until an trash can comes along.

Even though stuff ends up in the landfill, trash littered about makes a place look nasty and lowers people's morale.

It is amazing how many butts from roll-your-owns are found when cleaning up after an environmental rally. (Yes, there were plenty of compost, recycle and trash bins.)
