When my sister was in the process of moving house she left her cat at my parents' place. My dad noticed if the cat was fed tinned cat food it was always wanting more, but if it was fed fresh meat it would become satisfied. He thought that some addictive additive was included in the cat food. Maybe MSG? Let us not forget that the catfood and dogfood market is largely occupied by Uncle Bens that is owned by Mars confectionary....
there is also the gratification factor. do you really think cats, or any other mamalian life form, can't really tell? they put crap humans won't eat in 'pet' food because it's higher profit that way and they know humans will let them get away with it because most humans, however much they might pretend to, don't really that much care. or perhapse i shoud say, care intelligently, which is also saying carring enough to care intelligently, which is still getting back to saying the same thing. and many species do like parts of their prey species humans do not. but there IS a difference between fish guts and fish gut flavoured oat mean or bone flour biscuts. no big deep dark conspiracy exactly, just common sense most humans or at least members of our dominant society don't often use. =^^= .../\...
Perhaps it's partly because the canned food SMELLS good? I don't know. I don't feed my dog canned food or anything, he gets meat, bones, fruits and veggies and when he gets "treats", they're either corn and barley squares (made by a local home-business type deal) or peanut butter bones (made by the same people). He only seems to beg for food when he's hungry. So parhaps, other than the canned food SMELLING better, real food (I hate calling it "human food" because left alone in the wild, dogs and cats would eat the same damn thing) gives them more of what they need and a lot less of the shit they put in canned food and kibble. Maybe it's not that it's addictive, maybe my dear puppy-face himself feels better about eating small-ish quantities (for his size) and only one treat at a time because he realizes that what he *does* eat is good for him, because he feels better/healthier when he gets real food, as opposed to kibble and milk bone treats.
Canned food looks fucking nasty to me. I'd never feed it to my cat. Even if I wasn't a vegetarian, you couldn't pay me to eat that shit.
Cats are carnivores by nature - therefore should be fed raw meat and bones. The bulk of cat food is "grain" based, and filled with additives etc. An outdoor cat will hunt for mice etc, not plants. It is the salt content in tinned cat food that takes their fancy. The pet food industry is a horrible, money focussed industry. They're certainy not going to encourage raw feeding! That would mean lost profits. Cats nutritional needs are very different to a dogs (who of course also suffer from being fed a long term "artificial" diet) Tinned food has been shown to cause many serious health problems - including various cancers. Steer clear of it if you love your pets.
