I've been brushing my cats teeth recently and today one of the top premolars fell out. It was looking pretty red the days before but now the gums are back to a healthy pink. Should I be concerned?

Why do you brush your cats teeth? Its not neccessary and prolly stressful for him/her/
I'd call a vet to ask this question and once again, why do you brush you cats teeth?

Because my cat needed a teeth cleaning and I know I need to get them to the vet for it but unfortunately at this moment I can not fork out 600 dollars for a thorough cleaning,

so I read you can brush there teeth with cat toothpaste and a cat toothbrush. His teeth and gums look a lot better since brushing so I don't think it was bad to do but I do know that tooth he lost was looking like it needed to be pulled

go by what your cat tells you..... if it seems like its feeling better it probably is okay. If kitty seems distressed or keeps messing with that spot you might want to have it checked out.

Cat dental bills are really expensive and most veterinarians I have run across would prefer to do dental work as a last resort or only when absolutely necessary

My cat for some reason has always had bad breath and a lot of plague but I never brushed his teeth, which I should have so I take him to the vet for something else and the vet tells me he wants to do a full xray on his mouth because he thinks, but isn't sure, that he has some problem with his roots and it will cost me over 600 dollars.

Same vet called the next day to insist I put my cat on some prescription pills to get rid of ear mites, fleas and worms even though he hasn't had any of those things. The pill would cost 125 every 3 or 6 months can't remember.

So I don't really trust the vet I went to and need to find a new one, soon.

please do, the guy sounds money obsessed..
Well if your cats teeth look to bad then you could indeed, in that case I agree, but I would go see another vet or at least call one to ask why your kitties tooth fell out. Could be a root problem. Could be something else.

Thats great you are brushing your kitties teeth.. all owners should brush their pets teeth. I wouldnt worry to much about a tooth coming out unless he is complaining or acting in pain like Samson suggested. It might have been a baby tooth that didnt come out all the way. Also I think you do need a new vet. That one does sound money hungry. Stop worring.. relax. :)

    get pet insurance!
for $ 15.00 (u.s.a. funds) a month, i get full dental and medical care, and all meds are covered too!
that $ 15.00 covers all four (4) cats, and two (2) dogs.

I wouldn't worry unless your cat is very young or you think the wound is open to become infected. Your cats gums sound just fine. My old cat has lost almost all of his teeth and has never had a problem. I ask the vet to look at his mouth during routine check ups (they do anyway) and his wounds and gums have always been clean and healthy.

You also don't need to worry about cleaning your cats teeth. Smelly breath is pretty normal.

brushing a cats teeth? i cant imagine that being necessary.
    whats his diet like?

my dog had to have dental work once, but thats because hes a very hard chewer and he broke a molar right down the middle. i asked the vet if i needed to start brushing his teeth and he laughed and said it was silly, and im inclined to agree. he gets bones to chew instead.

It's not silly to brush cats teeth. Alot of people do it to reduce mouth issues. That being said you can reduce the amount you need to do it by making sure that you feed your cat hard kibble.

For some reason my cat always had bad breath and lots of plaque. I only brush about once a week and it has helped a lot. He eats hard food but maybe because he didn't get enough of mother's milk when he was born? We found him by himself when he was about 15 weeks old.

He seems to be doing fine now too
