i know from experience that both work wonders. do a lot of cardio. running has been the best for me. and for toning lift weights, but not a lot of weight. for example, if you can bench lets say 150 with 3 sets of 15, 3rd set struggling, put maybe 100 or 110 on the bar and do 3 or 4 sets of around 20 and 25. it will give some good definition to your muslces.

me personally, i started my whole thing lifting weights like crazy. after about 5 months i realized i wasnt going to slim down any doing this, so i started running a lot, and doing light lifting. i went from 300 to 240. then i decided i was going to keep the running the same, but i wanted to work on muscle structure and started lifting weights like crazy. i started benching 75 and now im doin about 245. which i got really stocky again and started to weight around 275, but started gettin lots of muscle. i loved having the muscle and everything, but it had no definition, so i stopped lifting a lot and started doing working on toning by dropping weights and doing a lot of reps. worked wonders.

now, my workout consists of running for a warmup, liftin weights hardcore, then everything i did my first time around, i go back and put about 3/4 the weight on and go for as many reps as possible. then my cool down is another 45 min to hour of running.

sorry it ended up being the story of the last year of my life, but i hope it helps.

you won't become chunky from lifting heavy weights. lifting heavy will give you the "tone" and "definition". read the thread called "women and weightlifting" i have on this forum: http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207350

its only a few posts down from this one. lots of info on debunking lots of myths associated with women and weighliting. women dont' have the testosterone in there bodies to bulk up like a man does. just doesn't happen.

squats (and the variations of squats) and lunges (and variations of lunges) are all great exercises and target the posterior chain for the most part. some might be more quad dominated, some might be more hip dominated.

squats are a bi-lateral exercise (you can do unilateral squats - pistols, split squats, bulgarian split squats, etc)...lunges are a unilateral exercises, meaning you use primarily one leg, which also means less weight, but you can still get quite a workout with lunge variations (step ups, backwards...)

theres plenty of ways to get your conditioning without using the treadmill...you can use a stationary rower, bike, swimming, weight lifting circuts, tabata protocol type lifting or with BWE (body weight exercise), BWE circuts and intervals

seriously, read the thread i made, read the links i posted in it, especially this one: http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php

running has always worked for me, especially running up and down hills or running up a mountain for as long as I can. Also sprinting as far as I can and then walking and repeating this for about half an hour if I am short on time works well.
I can't lift weight because I do get bulkier than I would like but I need to tone up so I do push-ups, pilates and yoga.
Just sticking with it has been the most important thing. I didn't see results for weeks and I was working so hard and one day I woke up and was like damn!
    good luck :)

I wouldn't run on a treadmill. Run outside, a whole lot less boring and you get a better workout.
