I NEED financial aid. I want to go to Reed, Evergreen, Hampshire, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkely, or NYU, so DUH, I'm gonna need a lot of financial help.

It looked good, honors classes, college classes before graduating, etc, etc. But then I got caught smoking pot. They found a bag and a freshly packed pipe. They know I was gonna drive to school afterwards, too. So for the possession and pipe alone, there are two misdemeanors.

So.....since there is that question on FAFSA about ever being convicted of a drug offense, do you think I'll still get decent financial aid???

Assuming this is your first offense, you will be disqualified from getting financial aid for one year. I'm not sure how that is calculated -- if it's one year from the date of the offense or one year from your graduation date...

Second offense, disqualified for two years.

    Third offense, disqualified for life.

Which is why you should get active with groups like Students for Sensible Drug Policy.

Do a google search for the organization and find contact info for a local chapter... To my knowledge, they're generally affiliated with colleges, I never looked to see whether any chapters are affiliated with high schools (since I didn't care until years after graduating hs)...

Well i go to a community college through a program through my high school where I am considered a college student with all the opportunities and rights that come with it, so even if its not a hs thing, I might be able to do it.

I was wondering about this as well. Are you permantly ineligible upon conviction?

Is this law retroactive? This law was passed in '98 and I got a misdemeanor in '97.

Interesting situation...I would assume it is, but that's a complete guess.

Dude, do you not bother to read the responses before posting? Look above.

Assuming this was your first offence, it shouldn't matter anyway, since the one year has long passed.

you will not get financial aid from the government and you will probably not get it from your school either. there are lots of people who lose out because of stupid things like this.

I'd go with this idea, actually. They can't check EVERY application. It's bullshit anyway that the government tries to take away aid for this. Oh, but if you murdered or raped someone, you can have all the aid you want!

If you look at it from the FAFSA point of view though, why were you spending money on pot when you could have been saving it for college? Lots of people don't get the money they need from FAFSA and have to turn down places like Harvard or NYU to go to a state school because that's all the aid they get. It's a dumb rule because there's MUCH worse things you can do then smoke a little pot, but it makes sense.

And why is the government spending millions of dollars on a war on pot when it could be spending that money on education? Hell, make it legal, add a HUGE sin tax, and spend THAT money on education too!! And what's the difference between spending money on pot or alcohol? Don't forget that you can have UNDERAGE DUIs and still get financial aid!!

For that matter, why are you spending 75 bucks on a pair of abercrombie jeans when you could spend 20 bucks on wranglers and put 55 bucks in the bank for college!! and 100 dollar nike shoes!? Make that 25 dollar cheapos and 75 extra bucks for college!

And people are whining because they don't get to go to harvard and yale? what about all the people in the world that don't have a hope of going to college, let alone having the standard of living we have. I'm not even going to go here...

I sure hope you aren't as narrow minded as you seem to be.

I didn't say I agreed, I just said I saw their point. I see the war on drugs as pointless and totally for the legalization of it, even though I think it's just as dumb and unattractive as cigarettes... but that's a different debate.

And $20 for jeans? What a rip off. :p Goodwill is where it's at.

And people are whining about not getting financial aide? Think about all the people in the world whose governments don't offer any source of aide at all. Or clean water. Or food. Or medical care.

It's a sad, sad thing in this country when people expect to be entitled to things. I hate the welfare mentality.
