my roomate listens to modern crap rock and pop. i mean, shinia twain kind of pop. terrible stuff. he tells me that the simpler the better, that its stupid to listen to music thats too subtle or complex. what the fuck? i try to tell him that i enjoy music in the same way that someone admire a great piece of art. my standards are high, but that allows me to enjoy higher quality music.

i actually convinced him to go with me to a keller williams show. martin sexton was the opener, and he was decent. my roomate said that martin was better than keller, just because he has a better voice. keller was SUPERB that night, one of the greatest acoustic guitarists out there, but he didnt like him because his singing voice wasn't catchy enough

    what a surface level asshole

    LOL
yea we try to be tolerant and say it's all perception and tolerance but it's a big lie. Miles Davis, Garth Brookes just not the same
I may be too superficial to hang out with a country music fan well I am actually

Now this is why the majority of mainstream bands, in general, suck these days.

    Thank you Clear Channel.

Though I do like country music, bluegrass, and folk, I wouldn't exactly consider Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, or any of those wankers country... Now if you'd like to get into better stuff... John Hiatt, Sonny Landreth, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Jerry Douglas, Dan Tymynski, Ron Block, generally what you would call alt-country. I also like progressive newgrass/bluegrass like nickelcreek and jam oriented stuff like Bela and Yonder... Way better stuff and the songwriting is down to earth, not written by some six-digit record producing Nashville slave to Time-Warner or BMG.

"can a musical taste be superior"

    Yes. very much so.

however, once you realize that your taste is better than the average person's, most people dont listen to you and think you're an asshole -- as is apparent on these forums :p -- but atleast in the end, you know that you're right and that anyone who disagrees is killing themselves with the crap they listen to.

I tried to tell my girlfriend's friend back in ohio that System of a Down weren't music, and she said that I was an intolerant son of a bitch.... well, go take music appreciation, lady.

I don't think that there's such a thing as bad taste.Someone listen to complex music,I'm listening to simplier music cause I want to relax with it, not to get tired with it.
But people must listen to the music they like

No, a musical taste can't be superior. I'm into rock etc. and I don't like rap at all but that doesn't mean I feel better than people who love rap and hate the music I like.
It's just a matter of personal taste.

Doesn't it come down to what the person wants out of it?
My dad is teaching my son that "in matters of taste, there can be no argument."
(Where was this attitude when I ws 16?!?!?)
I think Nathan Moore sums it up better with this old nugget.
"Opinions are like a**holes . Everyone's got one and they all stink."
Now do I think MY taste is superior..well of course. we all do, really. otherwise we'd listen to canned drivel jingles to be.

I suppose mine are as well, but I love the aderenaline rush I get when I find music nobody really knows about.

To hell with Radiohead soundalikes, I'd rather hear Debashish Bhattacharya, John McLaughlin, or something...

taste is inherently subjective..you can't say that a certain music "isn't music" especially..that makes no sense

Of course there can be a superior music taste. Music isn't created equal, if one thinks all music tastes are equal then they are basically saying that Bob Dylan is no better than Britney Spears. People with bad music taste should stop trying to make excuses for it and just admit that they have worse taste. Me personally, I have a ways to go in my musical searching, but to say that someone who takes whats on top 40 clear channel radio is equal to my taste is not right. There is inferior music, therefore there is inferior tastes in music. I'm gonna go to sleep now.
