What are the most useful tips you've picked up over the years? In my few years of sewing, I've learned it is sooo valuable to iron before sewing; it makes the fabric easier to handle & creates seams to guide you. I've also learned that straight pins are an incredible investment, lol. Finally, I've learned (the hard way) that its really useful to cut raw fabric as straight as possible & bigger than I think I'll need. rotary cutters kick ass old used sewing machines can be far superior to the brand new ones that are all full of crappy-assed plastic parts
I second the rotary cutters! They make patchwork go by sooo much faster, easier, and better. Also, a good pair of scissors makes a world of difference. And in appliques, wonder under makes it so much easier and makes it look so much better!
so true.. my friend has a pair of those and she has one of those huge cutting boards with the measurements on it. those things are wonderful. electric scissors are good also.. we used a pair of those while making a slip cover from my friends grandpa's couch.. they made it a lot easier.. the first time i used electric scissors, they took batteries, but these ones were really old and they plugged into the wall. i want to get a pair.
~Measure twice, cut once. ~Pre-wash your fabric to shink it and remove excess dye ~If using a paper pattern, press it before using to remove all those creases ~Hold your fabric taught in front and behind the needle while sewing, it helps keep your seams from puckering. ~always press your finished seams
