I heard a story about a friend of a friend coming across a psychedelic cactus in a neighbors garden and it got me wondering how easy it would be to pick a mescaline containing cactus from other cactus. I looked at the San Pedro and other trichocereus cacti and i was dismayed. they looked like really typical cacti! It seemed that surface features were so standard that they couldnt be used to identify the right cactus.

but it turns out that San pedro is actually very common and this is why it looks so 'typical'!

I looked at some cactus sites and looked at all of the other species of cactus in the same group as the psychedelic cacti.

There were no cacti with the following features that did not come up on a subsequent search for psychedelic cacti:

    5-7 vertical ridges with spikes
    relatively small or few spikes
    slim, fingery shape

Has anyone else here used this knowlege to spot out the many san pedro that infest the earth?

I dont think theyre even illegal in most places

i found australian sites selling them, but it was rather expensive for junior plants.

I used to stalk the night with a hatchet in my backpack.
Harvesting san pedro from your own bio-region is where it's at.
Learned a lot about my own bio-region of California, where I grew up, this way.

Lots of kids order the cactus on the internet.
But where did it come from? A farm?

    Definitely not the same spirit.

    Personally,
I just know what san pedro looks like
and can spot it from a mile away.

Teach yourself, and allow the cactus to teach you.

I would love to be able to go find San Pedros. Unfortunately, we get too much rain & our winters are too harsh here. It's about perfect for cannabis or poppies, though.

San pedros are very easy to identify, and they are the most common type of psychactive cacti. Ive seen heaps just walking along the road outide peoples houses, I wonder if they have any idea...

They are a very often used in landscaping around peoples houses, so I often check in at my big box stores and I often find them for sale. They are usually in pots two or three cuttings at a time and they generally look pretty healthy. Ive only found them at home depot around here, but Ive heard of people finding them at other big box stores, just depends on your area. You can also check local nursiers, but I've never had any luck with that here in my location, but it could be different where you live.

Ive heard its a good idea to replant san pedros you find in a big box store quickly with fresh soil (by actually gently rinsing away the old dirt from the roots) because they often contain bugs and nasty other crap you don't want in your plants. Plus, they can always use a larger pot to stretch their roots a bit. And always check your zone... you might beable to plant them straight into the ground (Like in places where in doesnt freeze overnight in the winter) you'll get the best growth in the ground. I live in zone 9 and Ive got pedros both in plants and in the ground.

Use nice porcelien pots with catcus soil that has good drainage.

Raising cacti are so much fun, at its amazing how much neglect (please dont neglect yours) they can take before they die. Even if you're convinced you dont have a green thumb because you killed everything you've tried to grow in the past, you should really give san pedros a try. They are MUCH easier to grow then you can ever imagine. I used to kill everything I tried to grow, no matter how hard I tried, but now I've got san pedros growing that Ive kept alive and healthy for a year and a half. They are such beautiful plants to just gaze whenever your relaxing on your back porch or wherever :p

Then consider the possibility of growing some cubes, but thats for a different thread/subforum.

Sorry to ramble, drank too much beer tonight :D

Are you guys serious about sneaking into peoples houses and stealing their cacti???
Your trip would be full of guilt, maybe. What I mean is it would be more fulfilling to harvest your own.

Please don't steal other peoples cacti. Just go ask them, say you collect cacti, and offer money for a cutting, most will give one away for free.

I found a house with three san pedro trees that each looked about two to three times as massive as this one

As far as im concerned, it would be a sin to leave their peace for the sake of the owner's garden pride. There is no guilt in making use of something that was previously unappreciated and unneccesarily large

Are you sure it's san pedro?
    San pedro is severely bitter!

Do you have a picture of your cutting?
How did you boil it down?

severly bitter eh? maybe i have an unfortunately weak san pedro. do not be fooled by my mistake with that picture above..

I blended the whole cutting up with water and then heated that for about half an hour until it had stopped foaming then simmered it for almost three hours and then pushed it through cloth
