The night when the Scots celebrate the life and times of Robbie Burns .

The really translates into an excuse for a piss up.

I'm meeting the wifey in just over an hours time and going for a couple of wee drams :)

What is happy Burns Night in Gaelic?

The words “Happy Burns Night” translate as “Oidhche Bhlas Burns”. People often say "Sláinte Mhath!”, which translates as "Good Health!”

It's not merely an excuse for a piss up; it's an excuse (perhaps even duty) for a formal piss up; Prince Charlie, kilt, big furry sporran, and incomprehensible poetry, all to the accompanyment of Highland pipes.
    I do miss a proper Burn's dinner.

lovely thought. wish it had proved that easy.
in today's world every tyrant has seen his own face, televised to the world,
making an ass of himself, without the appearance of the slightest trepidation nor regret.

of course that's a kind of seeing without really seeing, if only they could really see and understand what they are looking at.
still comes down to no GOOD thing, wishing to be feared.
when religion or anything else contradicts that, it undermines, gives an excuse and a way, to refuse to see,
not just those in power, but all of us.

(hard to believe another whole year has passed since the last time this came around)
(never found the gratification in "getting pissed". yes tried it several times.
fine with not being human if that makes me so. happy to see others enjoying themselves in their ways,
as i enjoy myself in mine.
no wish to take anything away from that.
rather a wish to live in a world all could enjoy)

They do a fine vegi haggis sold in Morrisons supermarket over here in the UK and produced in Scotland by Halls. Very nice alternative for her and I have the traditional haggis as we are both Scottish and Glenmorange from the 16 men of Tain and a fine single malt too, as is most fine 15-18 year old malts and do like Grant's too:)

The furtherest south for a distillery in Scotland is in on the borders in Dumfries and Galloway and the village is called Bladnoch from 1817 (closed for a short time of approx I think for 2 years) but the one bottle is a malt but nice all the same and this is near to where I lived and schooled for a short while in a place called Port William on the cost:)

My wife is from Elgin and has 26 distilleries in the immediate area, NICE, but is now in a care home with dementia.
