    Movie Blurb by Shale

I don't know what to say about this movie. Seemed to be the movie to see, what with all the hype I've heard about it. But hype was exactly what the movie was about. It explored how people can become famous without talent or a clue, and that style is more important than substance. It also explored homophobia and how people react to blatant queens like the lead character. It did all this exploration in an often crude and vulgar fashion, insulting just about anyone it touched. And, the viewers in the theater, including me, were laughing all the way thru it.

However, before anyone reads more of this review, decide if this movie is for you. I can't figure out how this movie got an R rating instead of NC-17. I will have to look into the MPAA fine print to see why a movie with half a minute of a gyrating penis that sings thru its urethral meatus didn't push this into the adults only stratosphere. I can understand if the raters were laughing so hard they forgot to vote on that one, but what about the ... well, you get the picture. Decide if you actually want to see the picture.

Our lead character, Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen) is a flamboyant, gay, Austrian fashionista for the TV show Funkyzeit.

    This guy even scares me!

After a screw up, he gets fired and decides to go to LA to become a celebrity. He is followed by Lutz (Gustaf Hammarsten) his assistant's assistant who has the hots for him.

The movie is a series of vignettes of Bruno doing interviews with unsuspecting celebrities who give some real reactions of disbelief, confusion and anger. These were Candid Camera moments but with a real film crew shooting. Scenes like Paula Abdul giving an interview about charitable work while sitting on the back of a Mexican laborer because the furniture hadn't arrived. She is visibly taken aback before she finally leaves because it just kept getting more outrageous. Of course Mexican rights groups were in a snit - but comedy is always at someone's expense. I'm sure the "laborers" were paid for their labor on camera.

And so the movie went from one outrageous, low humor moment to the next. Such as confusing Ron Paul (once presidential candidate) with Ru Paul and seducing the real Ron Paul on camera.

Bruno has much difficulty finding his fame and ends up traveling. He goes to Africa and smuggles a baby back to the US like Madonna and Brangelina. He appears on a TV talk show with the baby whom he named OJ. The audience is mostly black and reacts as expected when Bruno claims he got the baby in Africa by swapping an iPod and that having a baby is great for picking up guys.

Baron Cohen staged many stunts in this movie using the actual people instead of extras. In one he crashes a real rally supporting California's Prop 8, (y'know the God Hates Fags bunch) while coupled semi nude in bondage straps with Hammarsten.

There was also a scene shot in Arkansas where Baron Cohen got a bunch of real rednecks to attend a "Blue Collar Brawlin" event in which they expected to see cage fighting. Instead they saw homosexual portrayal in the cage and got real mad, throwing chairs over the chain-link fence into the cage. I would have been reluctant to incite that kind of reaction. This guy is either really brave or really nuts.

Sacha Baron Cohen pisses me off. This movie is one more way to offend as many people as possible.

It seems like you are falling for it ;)

My question is: is it as funny as Borat?

I don't think it's as funny as Borat, because I like the Borat character better. It was definitely funny though.

I never liked Bruno much. But seeing the previews made this seem like it could be a lot better than his parts on Da Ali G Show.
I think I'll have to check it out, but I won't toss all my eggs in the basket.

    Mmm, I'm unsure about SBC.
It does sometimes feel like the only person that he is trying to entertain is himself.
Borat pissed off an entire village because he used them.
Does he use people in this movie too?

I loved it. It was shocking, horribly crude, and ironic. It seemed like 90% of the people in my theater didn't seem to get the subtle humor, however, which is unfortunate. I don't think many people understand that he's trying to make a point instead of just making a filthy comedy.

Yes, he pisses off a lot more people than in Borat. In fact in some scene I was very surprised he didn't get murdered.

I mean "innocent" people. In reality he used and abused a lot of people for his own amusement...I found that quite patronising.
I wondered if it was the same.

Well what do you mean by innocent people? He pissed off a lot of rednecks. And it's up to you whether you consider them innocent or not. :p

Never saw Borat, never wanted to. Don't wanna see Bruno either and I won't. However Ali G was mildly entertaining because he was so ridiculously stupid.

I mean, in Borat, he basically went to some small town in Romania - where they did not know who he was or his real intentions - and made the people look like idiots.
So much so, the local officials tried to sue SBC.
    Those people were innocent people.

I don't care about silly old rednecks...some deserve a little bit of criticism...but I don't know if he used people in the same way he did in Borat...In Bruno.

Offending people is awesome. Its a great way to get people to think about what they believe in and why they believe it.
