Does anyone here make any effort to boycott companies with unethical practises? (eg pharmaceuticals, food producers etc) If so which ones and why? How strict are you with your boycotting and who might you use as an alternative if you needed something that they might produce?
The only thing I boycott at the moment is Mc Donalds. I haven't been in for about 3 years. The reason I don't go is because I really don't trust them over what they say is "vegetarian" or not. The veggie burgers are on the same grill as all the meat stuff and the milkshakes have gelatin in them. I also think they've taken globalisation a bit too far - they have way too much money, they're stupidly unethical and I'm glad nobody in the UK is really going any more
I dont eat Mc Donalds either, havnt for about a year, again because of the globalisation, the deforestation, the shitty food, and also the severe usage of MSG I dont eat Nestle and havn't for about 3 years. Because of thei severe unfair trade wth their coffee buisness and also the baby milk issue.
I don't generally believe that boycotting companies makes a blind bit of difference. And there's so many evil multinationals that it's impossible to avoid all of them. However, there are a number of companies that I despise so much that it gives me personal pleasure to deprive them of my money. I don't expect my actions to change the world, but I simply refuse to give them my cash out of sheer bloody mindedness.
i agree..i know me not eating Mc Donalds wont send them into bankrupsy.... but it will make me feel a hell of a lot better.... and i know me going in therer using their toilets and flushing the chain 20 times WONT cause them an extra large bill but damn i feel naughty!!
Well now, that depends entirely on how much ready-mix cement you put down there, doesn't it? I've heard some people do that. Allegedly
haha sounds like a grand idea!! ..........i mean ..not that id ever do any such thing to cause people so much hastle or anything
I do boycott some of them just to feel I am at least trying to do something..... I personally don't eat McDonalds, I don't buy Coca Cola products, Don't buy Shell or Esso petrol, I don't buy Gap, FCUK, Nike, Levi's or any Nestle products.... I try to buy most things fair trade or organic and I try to get all my clothes and that from places like ethical threads..... Surely best to do a little bit than nothing at all...
I think the 'stuffing large amounts of paper down the toilet or the sink' was a popular act when I worked at McDonalds several months ago. It was an absolute nightmare to clean up. I'm glad no-one dide put cement in the toilets while I was there.
Boycotting companies does make a difference, how could it not. You are one of many doing the same. If we all thought that what we did didn't have any impact and thought fuck it then nothing would ever change .. just because a company doesn't go bust doesn't mean you are not restricting it's growth or even pissing the board off and causing them to readdress a few of these issues .. it's not necessarily about smashing it all up but working to make what is in place work well. If Nestle were to sort out some of the issues they have then that would be a far better option than cwanting the whoole thing removed from the face of the planet .. you have to be realistic. And with Macdonalds its not globalization but standardization that is the problem. GREED IS AN EVIL THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE
If you think giggling in the toilets while wasting water is the way forward then you need to think again. :H
thats hardly the point. we are not only talking about shortages of water. more burden on an already overburdened outdated system doesn't help our rivers etc.
I doubt fleassy flushing the bog a few times is gonna do any more damage than you driving your car around the country, Giles
totally with you on that one dok. i avoid esso if theres an alternative nearby, though lets be honest.....if i was that worried i wouldnt be driving - they're all pretty bad. but if my guage is at the bottom of the red and theres no-one but esso around then i fill up. i avoid mcdonalds coz they are everything i disagree with in the world. i know it wont make a difference but i'm also a bit bloody minded when it comes to giving money to companies like that. i would much rather spend a little more on something that actually has a taste to it and isnt doing everything i hate. i had mcdonalds once in the last 8 years or so. i was at a service station and there was no other eating places open and i hadnt eaten for about 24 hours. nestle i avoid if there's an alternative i like, but some of their cerals are so yummy i just cant help myself. same with their chocolates. if i thought i was making a difference i would avoid them, but seeing as i dont feel like im altering anything i just think "fuck it" and buy it anyway. peace and love stardust xxx
I boycott a few very large and easily targetable industries, such as Esso. I tend to avoid buying clothes from sweatshops too. Boycott campaigns are very rarely effective unless such a mass of people get involved as to make a difference - the South African boycott for example. I'm currently boycotting all Israeli produce, but that campaigns not nearly as big. Boycott campaigns are ok, and if people feel morally that they personally shouldn't buy a produduct for ethical reasons, then I think they should get involved. But without mass involvement, we can't really place too much faith in them I feel....
