How? With what? Would you suggest it? Why/why not?

I really want to bleach my dreads. I have heard that bleach can really help them tighten up, but that's just an extra brownie point; I want to bleach them because I want to be able to switch to funky colors and because I'm dead tired of strictly brown.

But, how much bleach do you need? If your hair is a decently dark shade of brown, how many times do you have to bleach it so it's blonde (not platinum, but not orange either)? Is it a stupid idea, because I don't want to deal with maintaining the bleach once my roots grow out (although I guess at that point I could always just dye my whole head again?).

What's the cheapest bleach available that won't make my hair fall out (*cough*peroxide*cough*)? Should I go drastic and bleach all of my dreads, or just the bottom half?

Ah! So many questions. I guess most of these are situational, but anyone with any dready-bleaching experiences, please share. :)

Bleaching is fine. Some brands are better than others. Your hair colour probably wouldn't get to platinum in one go. Definitely only do some, either a few selected from the top layer, or just ones on the bottom layer... makes a big difference to rooty pooness. Yes if it all goes wrong you can dye your hair again.

That was probably not enough info but it's a start :)

Peroxide bleach, yes I'd suggest it. How much you need really all depends on thickness and length of dread. I went from dark brown to bleach in one application. Used 40% left it on for 45 mins and I was done.

To get white blonde you need ideally a 40% vol bleach. I use Jeromes which is very cheap £4.99 for four bleach applications.

If you really can't be bothered to maintain root coverage then I wouldn't bleach.
