I'm watching the red carpet on the grammies, and is it just me, this may seem out there, but are black female singers getting lighter? I saw Kelly Rolland, Rihana etc, and I swear they're lighter than they were when they first started...

Is there like some special, exclusive cream or something they're using? I'm not just talking about their faces, their arms and everything, they look a lot lighter. Anyone else noticed this?

Yes they definitely use skin whitening. I've seen pics of Beyonce with and without whitening.

Plus Alicia Keys, Rihanna(her father is basically Latino), Halle Berry etc are basically half black anyway. Beyonce's mother is half black, not sure about the father. Same with Aaliyah.

    Any pics (not airbrushing)...

It def' seems more to do with lighting and the quality of the pictures.

I was hoping for: 'No, I fucking hate them all.' Followed by an anti-Semitic smear for good measure.
    Oh well. :p

It's definitely the case some fashion magazines lighten a lot of the darker celebrities/models up.
I just don't think the above care enough to do it in their personal lives.

Asian girls have a lot of beauty tricks to appear whiter as well.

I know black girls in real life that avoid the sun because they don't want to be darker. I don't really get it. I think a dark skin tone in black girls is beautiful

They live in a society that doesn't value their natural beauty. Light skin, straight hair= beautiful in much of pop culture.

Actually that brings up a good point; white people tanning to get darker is really no worse then black people using products to whiten their skin.

Odon, I just typed in "Beyonce getting lighter?"and I got all of these results plus more:

Because, amongst other things, she looks like a fat version of Beyonce
    .
Plus she's half black, but behaves like she's a modern day Eliza Dolittle, or something like that.
Apart from when she doesn't get promoted-where she's quick to yell "this is because I'm black isn't it?"

At which point her bosses want to say "no its because you're a complete pain up the arse".

BTW, she's technically my "half aunt".

I think Beyonce is lightening her skin. Her and her record-label definitely do lighten her further on her promotional material lately.

Most of jamacain_youth's examples clearly could be because of the lighting. But the paparazzi photo isn't, and she looks whiter than me.

I don't know what the hell is going on in the 1st and 3rd picture.
The 2nd picture is where the company lightened her skin - not her
There was a big stink about it.
The 3rd and 4th one looks like she has got darker not lighter.

I don't think Beyonce is a particularly dark woman, to be honest.
Clearly in some photoshoots her skin does look lighter or darker (we have to consider some magazines want her to be as dark as possible or conversly as light as possible).
Some of the comparisons I have seen do not specify when the photo's were taken - so the darker Beyonce could have been taken after the lighter beyonce.

You also have to take into consideration who is doing the comparisons.
If a slightly militant ebony magazine is pissed of because she doesn't look like a African godess all of the time, and isn't as dark as the ace of spades - they are not going to be that fair.

I think it definitely depends on the lighting, angle and the camera used.
