Have you noticed allot of kids, girls 11-16 mostly, are becoming Bi since the song "I kissed a girl" was popularized? I mean, not saying I disagree with Bi or Homosexuality, I totally support it. Everyone deserves to be themselves, but I'm just saying/asking, could this song have started a "fad" for pre-teens and teenagers out of a sexual orientation? What do you think and why?

If anything, this could be a resurrection of the bi and/or lesbian fad/hype, whatever you call it, that came up with the music video to the song All The Things She Said by the russian duo TaTu, who were acting out a teen lesbian romance in the video, and were acting out a lesbian relationship when promoting their album.

As we all know, that turned out to be a fake, but was great in creating a media hype and might have prompted teenage girls to openly come out.

Katy Perry's song is just another pop culture prompt, to be sure. Anyone noticed, that she filched the title from an even better song about kissing a girl...?
I prefer the one by Jill Sobule. It's more fun and wittier, for sure.

Well I think it's less of being "bisexual" but more about being "bi-curious" one of my best friends, I've liked her for about two years now, and she doesn't really have any qualms about messing around with me a bit and jokes, but she's only bi-curious/bi tendencies. She likes how girls look and likes joking with guys about it, but she won't do very much with me, let alone any other girl. Might be a fad, yeah, but I doubt most of these girls are as "bi" as they claim to be.

Bisexuality's been accused of being a fad for as long as I can remember, long enough to become a cliché. I think there is some truth in it, but it's more that experimentation is fashionable - whether one then commits to a sexuality based on it doesn't seem to vary much.

I agree. I think people always say bi-sexuality is a fad...and like there will always be those people who make out with other girls to turn on boys, and that's unforuntate....but fad or not, I'm all sorts of down for normalising alternative from the socially excepted genders and ways of sexuality...and whatever it takes to inspire people to explore these ways it good- although I fucking hate when fads pass and everyone suddenly thinks it's so passe to be not just into girl or not just into boys...

i think if sexuality is in-built to someone's condition, and experimentation happens, then its not REAL bisexuality -- its a very weak bi-curiosity, but by title only, not by nature. as a bisexual male, i knew i was into both genders when i mentally started puberty at like 9, and i didnt know what gay was or what straight was, but i knew what i liked. if a song can prompt you to desire these things, then surely these girls must be repressing something already inherent? no?

    i dunno.

Sorry, to clarify, what I mean is that, at times when it's fashionable to experiment (as oppose to when clear, binary gender roles are fashionable), people are possibly more likely to realise that they're bisexual.

But that's*me speaking from a position of not really knowing. I grew up being told that it was normal to have some confusion or some peculiar urges as a teen, but they never went so far as to say "and if you have these urges you might be gay". It was confusing to me, so I figure it must be even more confusing to a bi person who has both "sets" of urges going on. But I might be wrong, and people might know they're bisexual without trying it or having any revelatory experience.

I has become a fad around some areas, undoubtedly. I have a little sister who is emo, and I don't mean to stereotype, but all they do is kiss each other. Boys with the boys, girls with the girls. I have heard suggestions my sister takes part in this also, and she is the straightest person I know.

But that's exactly the thing, kissing. I do not consider simply kissing to be anywhere near bisexual by nature, I could make out with a girl as it means nothing to me. Granted, I wouldn't enjoy it mind!

So many of the bisexual people I know have gone no further than kissing, and have no intention of going further. Why would they consider themselves partly gay then, unless it was a fad? For the record, this is only a number of people in the world.

Bisexuality is not as black and white and gay and strait, even to the point that people do not take it seriously. Two girls kissing, isn't it a sleazy way to get strait guys off? So, it's safe to say when a girl may insist she is bisexual, it may all be rather ambiguous, depending on the company she keeps. All in all though, I know a couple of bisexual people, and it's not something that bothers them. They just get along with what they do, and take advantage of any pretty people even willing to pucker up! :p

in my experience for as long as ive been into "alternative" subcultures, theres been bisexuality. pretty much as soon as i started hanging with the skaters and the stoners and the punks and goths and later emos, i was encountering girls and boys who were, within their little groups, totally open about being bi or gay.

i dunno how much of it was fashion, or rebellion, and how much was just genuinely wanting to experiment, but it does seem to me that a lot of people i have met over the years, especially girls, have been bi or bi-curious at least.

how genuine were they about it? i dunno about all of them. but ive had one-night stands with some and relationships with others, and if it was just a fad they were pretty committed to the act!

Well, teen for me meant late 80s early 90s, which meant Madonna at her most publicity hungry. I remember the impact she had on the teen bi girl act. I dont think much has changed

If were going to bring up the 'Bi' act than we can talk about how 'fashionable' it is to be gay or lesbian as well. Personally I've always loved both genders, but i do know many people who flip from being gay, bi, straight. ( most of them are in their mid teens) Really, it isn't any of our business what they do in they're journey in finding themselves. Just remember it isn't just the bi-act that gets put on, I think it's pretty even across the board.

it's always been "popular" and "cool" to be bisexual... especially for slutty girls when they drink at bars. but just because you're a drunk whore making out with a chick doesn't mean you're bisexual. you have to genuinely find the same gender attractive and be able to love the same gender IMO....

I'm sorry this gets under my skin, and I know I'm probably going to sound like a tool again.

But come on? You know a lot of flippers in their mid teens? If you do what are you doing hanging around kids in their mid teens?

And who are all these people that flip from gay to straight? I never see them.

You do know many people. You know many gay guys?, even though most gay guys dont let girls in the inner circle. And who has the time to really know many people?

    Stop making stuff up

Where i work, yes there are a people in their mid teens. That's how. It got under your skin ? GOOD. Because this 'bi flipping' thread & your comments got under mine. How can you start generalizing gay men just because you are one doesn't give you the right to be their spokes person. I don't need to make stuff up just to prove my point, they're facts and things I've experienced and just because that something bothers you doesn't mean you can just dismiss it's existence.

That last bit was very funny, thank you for that! Had a right ol' chuckle.

And yeah, my best (girl) friend, she used to get off with loads of girls, and now looking back she is embarrassed about it. She doesn't hesitate to explain that it was her boyfriend that truly enjoyed it.

So on that note, I agree with addictedt0chaos wholeheartedly.
