what do yall think is the best state for camping trips? I have only camped in texas, it's pretty nice if you find a spot without cati.
Well, being originally from California, I would have to say California. The Sierra Nevada mountains are the ultimate spot, as are the Coastal Range. I guess it depends on what your interests are, but the Sierras has great trout fishing, hiking trails, and much wildlife, and probably some of the best scenery in the USA. Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Tahoe, etc.
Stay away from Maryland. You need a permit to strike a match, you can't free camp anywhere on public lands, and urban sprawl is eating everything in sight. "Free State" my ass.
I've had a great time camping in Colorado. My favorite area so far is probably around Grand Lake in Grand County. It's the largest natural body of water in the state and peaceful. There's some good camping info at Grand County's official tourism board page.
well i'm canadian so i gotta say that where i live is a great place, but that's being really bias. all i know is that a lot of people from minnesota, iowa, illiinoise, wisconsin, and michigan come here to fish and hunt. i've never camped in the states but i'd love to camp in utah or colorado.
Me and my friends like to camp in my town (Yellow Springs, OH) . .. or sometimes I go alone. . it isn't to far from my house where I like to camp at.. . but umm ya some might consider my method "trespassing" .. . .. I've camped in some absolutely beautiful spots in PA and KY also .. but I don't think i've camped in enough to really tell you the 'best'
Can you really choose by state. Many states have a variety of environments, especially Texas. Where did you camp in Texas? Or are you talking about laws? I have not done much camping outside the Southeast so my experience is limited to this area. For this time of year in this area I think going to a high elevation in the Great Smoky Mountains is really nice. It is much cooler up there making the experience much more comfortable. Plus the Smokies are beautiful. You can camp in campgrounds if you like pretty cheap or in the back country for free.
I've only camped in Georgia and North Carolina.. and the scenery and secludedness of North Carolina is awesome.. but Georgia has lots of caves and those are also fun!
well being a show-me state native...and a very active camper....and having camped in quite a few different states.....I still hold true to missouri and arkansas...the outdoors and facilities, and availabilities are really quite endless...with all the assorted activities which go hand in hand with camping...both states are very liberal in state parks and campgrounds....not to mention some of the best natural settings you will find in the land...and that is not to discount other places thur out the land...every state has it's benefits...for those who are willing to seek them out
Missouri is nice minus then chiggers and tics, Washington state has some killer places in the Cascades, on the Sound, over on the Olympic and Ocean side, and even the far western side of the east slopes is nice like around Fish Lake and such.
I don't think you can pick a whole state. For example, in January, I camped Florida for 8 days. I spent half of it at a state park near orlando. It was so crappy! We were the only people with tents. The sites were slabs surrounded by a few feet of grass, then the next site. NO TREES! The shower/restrooms were closed from 9-11 every day for cleaning. Maybe that's because almost everyone there was over 70 so they wake up at 5am. The second half of our trip was spent on the gulf coast at Oscar Scherer (sp?) State park, south of Sarasota. It was so awesome! They had a great exhibit and staff, canoe trips for $5!, and every site had this beautiful canopy of trees. It was like we were in the jungle the whole time. The river flowed a few feet behind our site. The facilities were nice, and the trails were great. I hope to go back there someday. Every state is so different. I'd love to camp them all! Some of my favorite memories of camping: Brunet Island State Park in WI, Henry Lake in Idaho, Kodachrome Basin in Utah. I was a kid for the second two. Going to the first one in a few weeks here.
if you are interested in caves, go to missouri. They dont call it the cave state for nothing. There is literally thousands of them! While im not an experianced camper, i really enjoyed everywhere here in MO that I camped at.
word, I LOVE it up there. I was just up there for Camp Bisco. I'd like to add that CO is an amazing place to camp/enjoy the outdoors!
Definitely in Linville Gorge, NC. This is one of the most dangerous hiking areas in NC. But it is loads of fun.
