I think the song's name is "All I Ever Needed (Was to Be With You)" by Carlos Santana. Came out about 20 years ago. "Freebird" (the live version) by Lynyrd Skynyrd "Drowning" by Pete Townsend with John Williams, live accoustic version played at the "Secret Policemans Ball" Concert circa 1980.
I wouldn't call my choices "best" rather personal favourites and there are many that come to mind but two that instantly spring are The Third Bardo - Five Years Ahead of My Time The Sonics - Psycho
Tom Verlaine of Television on 'The Dream's Dream' Robert Fripp of King Crimson on Brian Eno's 'St. Elmo's Fire' David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on 'Cymbaline' (live '69 versions of the song) Michael Karoli of Can on 'Mother Sky' Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music on 'In Every Dreamhome, A Heartache' Steve Hackett of Genesis on 'Firth of Fifth' Eddie Hazel of Funkadelic on 'Maggot Brain' And just about anything from Hendrix.
Pat Metheny on On Her Way from the Album - Speaking Of Now - let's face it guitar players just don't get much better than him!
I dont think its my favorite solo but i love it probably "free bird" i guess cause its my favorite song eheh peace chickens
Jimi Hendrix- Little Wing, Bold as love Zeppelin- Stairway live in L.A forum I think Lynard skynard- Freebird
Incubus-Psychosylocybin King Crimson-21st Century Schizoid Man and even though it's mostly weird noise, i love the way it was pulled off....Soundgarden-Beyond the Wheel
Stoned Innocent Frankenstein by Daevid Allen. Guitar doesn't get more acid than this. As The Years Go Passing By by Otis Rush. This is the Chicago guitar god at his best. Going Home by Helicopter by Alvin Lee (live in Woodstock). I've never heard anybody go so fast for so long as in this solo. Little Wing by Stevie Ray Vaughn. I hate to admit it, but Vaughn's rendition of Hendrix's song is the better one. The whole Band of Gypsies live album by Jimi Hendrix. No explanation needed. Half of Heaven at Half Past Eleven by Michael Karoli. This was recorded live in Seattle in 1998, during a performance by the Damo Suzuki Network. Karoli's guitar separates this masterful jam from most others in the genre. It floats and stings and defines the space. Unfortunately, this is probably the last recorded live perfomance by the great guitarrist from Can (one of the best the world has ever seen), before his untimely death in 1991.
The solo for White Cluster by Opeth is really awesome. Any solo from the new Dream theater album "Train of thought" kicks ass.
There are two great names missing here: Pink Floyd and John Petrucci. I love solos in Pink Floyd songs, especially the one in the wall. John Petrucci is technically the best guitar player in the world, but of course, after a while the speed of his solos gets boring and they're not really as interesting anymore...
