while i'm of the younger generation, i often find myself feeling behind the times. i'm only 22, but so often people my age or younger talk about things that just make me scratch my head and say "huh?" i still think of the nintendo 64 as a cutting-edge miracle of modern science. 3 dimensions in which to move around? look out, reality, you have a new adversary! of course friends have PSPs, PS3s, Xboxes, and so on. I know my old N64 is shit, really, but i just am stuck on it and cant find it reasonable to spend the money for a much better, newer system with controls i fail to understand and games i've never heard of and don't know anything about. i am amazed that my laptop can pick up the internet sometimes without having a cord plugged into it, and i know this is called wifi or wireless, but i fail to understand how it works. i just have found myself reflecting on how little i know about whats going on in the world of popular technology, and its not exactly alarming but somewhat disheartening. i'm not sure exactly why it bothers me, because these are all things i lived perfectly happily without for years. but it does bother me a little that people talk about things that i am completely in the dark about. i think i started thinking about this because i keep hearing about "torrents" for downloading stuff. wtf is a torrent? heh, i'm pretty dumb sometimes! :banghead:
Don't feel bad our family didn't have a color tv till I was 8. In college during a fortran 77 class we used to have to wait 1 week and walk 3 blocks to get a printout. Hell I did a 40 page research paper (on polymers) on my ole C-64 But I do know what torrents are edit: Forgot to add - I was freaked out to learn what torrents were and wtf when did they start!!
No worries man I'm with ya. I know a few basics to get me by, but when i try and use em people assume i know more then I do so they start talking geek and I get completely lost easily.
Torrents are a file used to download little or lots of information through a torrent downloader, for example Azureus (which is what I use), it's legal but most of the time the file being hosted is a dvd movie or music, which is illegal to download without paying for copyrighted material, which I would NEVER ever do
ok i feel bad for you not knowing about torrents. you dont need to know how it works exactly to use it, just basicly: you want a computer file, anything like programs, games, tv shows, films, music books, filthy movies... anything!!! so there are torrent sites, best are mininova, ISOhunt, piratebay. thse are free and you can find almost anthything. there is aslo private sites, like demonoid, oinks pink palace and torrentleech. thse sites are closed to registrations, only way u can get in is if someone whose in there invites you - the community seeds alot and you can get very fast download speeds. torrents are all about downloading, seeding is once u have a file, u keep it running so other ppl downloading it get it faster, then they do it for other people and everyone is happy and feels contributed. leeching is downloading, leechers feed off the seeders until they download the file, then they either seed back to ratio 1 (same amount of mb or gigabytes donwloaded or even more), or they act like cunts and dont seed. think of the actuall torrent like a free ticket, all u need to do is find it, and find a valid one (many seeders - ppl who will share the file so u download it) u go to these sites - either free or private and search for what u would like, pick out the most seeded item you want, and dl the torrent (ticket). it will take a second. now either before this or after u need a program to input the ticket in. i use utorrent, it is the easiest and most reliable, azureus is alot like it. use one of these, just dont go for shit ones like bittorent. now you install the program, set up your speeds options etc, and you open ur ticket in the program, it will let u select which files from the whole torrent to Dl, like say if its a music collection, u might not want all of them so u can pickout or just dl all. so u press ok and dl starts. leave the pc overnight and depending on your speed of connection and torrent seeders u will get the file or a % of it. its very easy after you use it a few times and is a great way to enjoy free entertainment. it is quete illegal IF YOU ARE CAUGHT, just dont shout i dl pirated entertainment in a police station and you will need no need to be paranoid, everyone does it now so yeah its more of step by step but i hope you understand or maybe try to use it for educational purposes ONLY !
i already recall starting many stories with "well, back in the old days..." and i'm only 22.95 years old. nesta, the folks at MIT have discovered (or won the race to) wireless POWER--electricity. pretty soon you won't have to even plug your appliances into the wall! plus they'll ALL have wifi built in so they can send consumer "use" information back to the companies to "enhance" their "marketing" departments.
i'd like to see some documentation on that considering electricity flowing through the air does not have a ground, nor a complete circut anyways, imo your better off with your N64 then with newer gaming systems in terms of that area for other stuff though like general technology I would start to begin to pick up a little as you go along if you can, eventually all this stuff although now may seem just for geeks and power computer users, in the very near future it's going to be very much common place for everyone i'm 21 and i've always liked computers, as well i go to school and work in the field, so i cant really relate, but the whole world is going techy, so people who think they can get by without the knowledge are going to have a very rude awakening in the near future I loved how when i was watching Leno a while back and that larry the cable guy redneck came on and did a stand up bit a big part of his act was "attempting" to make jokes about computers, it was funny because clearly the california audience didnt find anything funny in larry going off on not understanding the internet
because if i wanted to read about someone talk about ninteno 64 then i woulda gone to the game section. but i came here to read about weed.
But it's the fucking stoner's lounge, you don't have to talk about jack if you don't want. 14 year old, go on a different thread why don't cha? (not that I'm against 14 year olds or anything in general, it's just there's no point complaining)
i dont really get how computers work but i know you should get over to a torrent site asap ive only been using them since this summer but its a great way of getting any kind of media i really dont get how any kind of technology actually works in full detail well maybe some but who cares eventually all those tech guys will blow themselves up trying to figure out how to teleport eachother let them do that and we can all get back to smoking weed
I keep up with technology knowledge wise.. but my computer is WAAAAAAAAAY outdated.. its a 2000 Gateway.. its a POS now.. when i get a new computer I know i'm gonna be like "wow.. this is like super fuckin fast".. but im not gonna be amazed by it because i keep up with technology and understand that my computer has nothing on whats out today
I also have a N64... but i've had a PS2 and a XBOX.. personally i think theres a lot of hype in the XBOX360 and PS3.. Wii.. has something completely different to offer and i think that is cool.. i would buy a Wii.. but I would be happy with a XBOX or PS2.. instead of their newer versions
I like the wii, had to sell mine for financial reasons, but will eventually get another one once I get back on my feet.
