I'm a bit of a noob, too, but your hair will grow as fast as it grows. Get yourself some non-residual shampoo, a nice wool beanie, and don't comb it. You can also do a salt water spray. It will dread, just give it time. I am two week in with 5 inch hair, and I am already feeling knots.

mmmm about the "non residue" shampoo, most will tell you to get dr bronners. For those who claim it to be great, good for you, but i have been using it for 2 months and it is the deffinition of residue, i really dont understand what is so great about it. Get yourself some Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo, doesnt leave any residue, you dont need to use a lot, and it smells and rinses out easy. The downfall is you can only buy it from a Salon.

Dr. Bronner's is quite a bit cheaper, if you want to compare the two. Does it leave residue in your hair? I didn't feel it in mine, but would be open to differing experiences. (I've used the citrus and peppermint.)

well i didnt thing it was leaving residue either, but my sis recomended the stuff and my hair felt so much better, and there was all this gunk in my drain stopper thing, and now since ive been using this i dont get it anymore. if you use bronners i say get the liquid and dilute it a lot, i used the bar soap and didnt dilute it (dont think you can?). but yea, ive read if you use liquid put it in a bottle 1/4 Dr Bronner and 3/4 water.

i'll put a bit of water in the tub and just a small amount of tea tree and soak. Then i'll rinse off in the shower, trying of course to conserve as much water as possible. Rinse Rinse Rinse, no residue. Dr. Bronners is fantastic. Cheers

You must really, really dilute Dr. B soaps... The 'gunk' that has been mentioned is just one of those properties of true castille soap. It will leave buildup if you don't mix it properly.

REALLY dilute it - he screams it all over the bottle, 'ya know! hehehe

Oh! and, ACV rinses are right on for removing buildup. I do mine once a month with some lovely oils, so I don't smell pickled.

I always had issues with stickiness left in my hair when using Bronners...even after diluting it. I use only baking soda now and it feels soo clean!!

But Playa, as for making for hair grow faster...you said it's only a quarter of an inch long?? You've got a long ways to go my friend! It's going to take a while so I would say just forget about your hair for a while and try to keep busy doing other things. And soon enough your hair will be locking up. Patience my friend, patience!
