For all of the actors amongst us, to what extent do you become a character you're playing in your every day life? I knew a guy in high school who every time he had a role in a play he completely became that character because it helped him play his role better; it was kind of awesome. I especially liked when he was playing a super eccentric mad scientist Anyway do any of you actors do anything like that to help you in your roles? Also do any other non-actors sometimes take on a character in your every day life just for the hell of it? Sometimes I'll play a guy named Allan, he's schizophrenic and very racist...erm but that's another story.
If you're a professional actor, taking on your character in everyday life is questionable at best; if you're in high school, it's pretentious as fuck. Sometimes, just for the hell of it, I turn into Bob Dylan or Hunter S. Thompson for awhile.
HAHA when I'm loaded I turn into Thompson, or so I'm told. As for my characters... I find it unhelpful to stay in character every day of my life. I need to be me, you know? I need to keep the character fresh. During the actual performance is a different story. Once they open the house, I usually find a quiet spot in the bowels of the theatre to sort of "wind up" my energy and bring my character forward. I usually stay in character until the performance is over that night. Every once in a while, when I have trouble creating a character, I will sometimes go shopping or too the mall or park with a character to see if it "works." Then I'll bring that character to the director and we'll go from there.
Or perhaps it helps them with their role, gets people to go to their play, and at the very least entertains the hell out of me
I've never seen people at my school being their character outside of rehearsals and the actual play/musical. We just don't do it. We do something called "magic time" before each show to focus our energy as a whole cast... but we don't have anyone walking around like their character all the time...
