I dunno if it's been done recently but, to those of use who are musicians, what bands/projects have you been involved with? What postion did you fill in the band? Do you think you under, over, or perfectly skilled for that position? Did you learn anything for them? Was it your "style" or was a stretch for you? Did anything materialize from it? Did you play parties? Did you record a CD? or in my case, do you have a bunch of crappy demo tapes lying around? :H
I'll get the ball rolling. I've been involved in 4 bands durring my life, and have filled positions for other bands when a friend has been unable to make it. The first of which was named "Lokkii" This gloomy Goth/metal band was my first atempt at rythem/vocals, I struggled to string together power chords, and to learn Type O Negative Covers. This band consisted of me on Rythem/Vocals (I've always been able to sing well playing), my best friend at the time on Bass and Back-up vocals, and a drummer from my high school. I learned a hell of a lot in this band, as I was just learning the dynamics of the guitar. At the time, I was obsessed with Goth-Metal, most specifically the band Type O Negative. Though I always made sure that it never sounded "wussy" ala the cure. So this band was right up my alley in terms of style. The band had a few demo tapes, with material I still use in my current band, but we never really played live for anyone. My next band was named "Militia" This was my next step as a musician as I had matured as a vocalist and as a guitarist. Gone where my slow chugging power chord riffs, and Baratone Vocals, now they were replaced with double picked, over complicated, speed metalish riffs that went along perfectly with the new Growl/Bark (Think Motorhead). In this band I still played Rythem and Vocals, and my best friend still played the bass for me, but we had replaced our drummer after our old one had moved , and we had adopted a Lead Guitarist who took over back up vocals for my bassist. This band really gave me a taste of what an actual band is like, arguements, fights over "the way a song should sound", money issues, fist fights, and an eventual violent break up. We played many parties, and won a battle of the bands, and were actually set up to go in a studio before our untimely break-up. A while later my other bassist friend and I started a punk band called "The Angry Town Folk" A.K.A "Scripto and the Angry Town Folk" A.K.A "Random Punk Name" A.K.A whatever name sounded good that night. with the drummer from my previous band. For the first time, I played lead guitar for a band, and shared lead vocal duties with the rest of the band. Although my solos were kind of hackish, and "cheap", they still sounded good and I was proud of them. This was a fun band to play in, but it wasn't really any advancement for me as punk really wasn't any challege. Also, I'm really Metal to the core, so punk wasn't really my thing, I mean I enjoy it, but it's just not.....ya know... my calling. So it was kind of a stretch. We played a whole crap load of parties, and were always awesome on stage, bar-none the most energenic and humorous band I have ever been involved with. We never really got around to recording anything, but we still jam ever once in awhile, but time issues have kind of put this band on the back burner for the time being. My current band has recently formed with a friend I met in college, the drummer from my 2 previous bands, and his bassist friend (who is amazing.)As of now we have no name. I once again play Lead Guitar and Sing Lead Vocals in this band, my friend from college plays rythem (which is very nice, considering his classical backround), the drummer drums, and his friend plays lead bass (not joking). This bands style is really what I want to be doing now, it's the most talented band I've even been involved in, and the style just seem to fit me at this point in my life. We are writing mostly Heavy Metal, slower than my second band, and a little less heavy than my first band.
I’ve done the full band thing, but that was years ago, and all I got were the demo’s that I may have lost, but hopefully shall turn up in the storage unit. Right now, me and a friend are working on stuff together. Blending electronic music with an indie rock style or just doing plain acoustic demo’s to later be fleshed out; stuff like that. Most the things we’ve done have gotten a lot of response from people that have heard them, so we’re starting to get pretty psyched, and should be sending a couple of our tracks out to labels/magazines/contests really soon... just waiting on the album cover artwork Oh, and now for a shameless plug! i've been in a few unsuccesful bands over the years... i went in and out of bands with an old school friend of mine for years, until i was about 16 or 17. we both played guitar, and sometimes he played drums. our names were: slush, hot rods from hell (oh, lord. his idea.), self destruction, liquid metal, and a bunch of nameless projects. when i was about 16, another friend of mine and i started a band. i played guitar and sang, and he played bass. we recruited a friend of his from high school to come in and play drums with us, but that didn't work out. then we got the other friend from the above paragraph, to come in and play drums. him and i switched off positions sometimes (i played drums, while he played guitar and sang),we had a few songs worked out. but, we broke up shortly before our first show. theeen, i just did some work by myself, for a while. some acoustic songs, some on electric but with no other instrumental accompaniment. (SP?) i recorded a bunch of demos, but never did anything with them and they just sat around... then early last year, i joined a band this guy i worked with has going on. i jammed with them, everything was working well, and they liked what i brought to the band. everything was going good, but there was some stuff that went on, and finally they told me it wasn't working out. and i said fine, and went my own way. well, a month or so later, i started jamming with the drummer from that band, and we had our own little thing going on. we had a reeeaally wicked "band" and an amazingly original sound going on. i was soooo fucking syked for that band, and happy that it was finally working. we did a handful of songs, and recorded them an everything. but, eventually it didn't work out, due to him being in the other band, and we stopped working together... late last year, i took all the recordings him and i did together, and complied them into an album. we had 11 songs, with a hidden, funny stoner track at the end. i made a bunch of copies, and handed them out to a few people, but never went farther with it, than that. him and i, hyped up by listening to our old recordings, got together and did a few more songs. we recorded them, but the vocals didn't work out and they kinda sucked. wicked fucking songs, though. i wanted to keep doing more with him, and maybe play a few shows and put another album together. but, i moved out to ontario, and now we can't. recently, i took all the old demos i made by myself, and put them onto CD. i have 14, all original songs on it. it's got a really interesting, obscure "artsy" kind of sound. i'm gunna start shopping it to labels, and doing that whole thing, hopefully. if anyone's ever interested in it, and maybe wants a copy, then just email me or PM me and let me know. two of the songs, plus an extra song i didn't use for it, are available on my website. here's the link, if you're interested: http://free.hostdepartment.com/7/777seven777 and that's pretty much my musical career, so far. i've been playing guitar for around 10 years, and have been singing for a few. i'm always writing and coming up with new ideas, and just trying to get something going.
