I was wondering what the hippie's stood for. What all did all the hippies march for. I know that they had protest over the war, but what else did they stand for? Love, Peace, Free will? What did they do about the government and what do you think we should do now? We don't have freedom. I don't even think that we chose the president. They just act like we do. I am tired of this government controlling us. We are the land of the free but what freedom do we have. They are taking everything away from us. What can we do about this? Please let me know.

    Thank you,

    Cat

It's very hard to put a finger on any one thing that hippies stood for, it meant different thing's to different people. Of course the main focus when we were in mass was the war, it was unjust and we had no choice if our number came up whether to go or not, so we wanted it stopped, I mean we were over there killing people and no one could give us one good reason why, what did they do to us ? But that is not the only thing, there was civil rights, how stupid the whole system was, think about it, we would deny a group of people their civil rights because of their color, so that needed to change. Nonconformity was a part, we saw our society as being to materialist and competitive, it made greed run rampant, we saw a different way, live together work together and above all else get along with one another. When someone told us we had to do thing's this way and that was it, we would say why who said so and find our own way. As far as goverement went yes we wanted to change the way it worked, it worked to benefit the goverement it self and the super rich, and guess what it still does. In a way we made goverement stronger not smaller so it backfired on us, but we tried and failed, they had the numbers and the power so what could we do but just try. All we can do about what is going on now is to stand up once more and say enough, but people today are sheep, can't be bothered. We were about freedom for all and goverment still does not get it. So all you can do now is keep your head in the right place and live your life the way you want, and be as free as you can be. I don't know if I answered your question or not probably not, it all got to complicated back then. Being a hippy is a state of mind you either have it or not, I hope you have it.

    Peace

Everything silverhippy said was true. The thing (in my twisted mind) we stood for most was change. If it wasn't fair, equal for all, honest, without fraud, not coerced by force, we were against it, and were willing to take to the streets in protest. We didn't accept that it had always been, and would always be, "that way".
You are old enough to vote, find what you believe in and back it up with you ballot. Become active. You have the freedom to organize your friends into a voting block. You would be surprised how much weight a politician gives to a bunch of letters from hometown voters. Volunteer for canidates who support your position on the issues. Tell the ones who don't that you are going to organize behind one who does. Make your voice heard. When bills like H.R. 1955 and 1959 are proposed scream at the top of your voice that you concider it an infringment on your right to free speech and want the bill dropped or rewritten in plain language to ensure that your right to speak remains intact. Keep the faith.

Thank you guys. I want freedom in the country. My husband and I are starting up a activist group called " We the people". I want to have my voice herd. I want to vote on things and not let the government decide for me. We are America the free not China. What has this country come to. I want the people as a country to vote on things not people in state's.

How do we make the people stand up for what they believe in, Freedom? We are getting all our freedoms taken away. How do we get people to be people and not sheep?

It would take too much time and space to rewrite whats already out there for you to read. Go to Libertarian Party website and read what they believe in. Look up Classical and Social Liberalism and see how they view the function of government. I'd recommend the Republican and Democratic Parties but its pretty obvious your disenchanted with them. When you call for voting on a national level you vacate states rights. That is something the Founding Fathers feared. Too strong a national government means control of the states and their citizens. Careful what you wish for. The Internet can reach many people, even those sheep will follow you. My web guy has my site at the top of all the search engines, that's how people find your organization. If you can't find someone in your area to set you up PM me and I'll put the two of you in touch with each other.
Keep the faith, keep up the fight.

Yes yes listen to warmhands420 the last thing you want is to take away states rights do that and they got you, I think I know what you mean when you say we need to vote as one and not 50 different takes on things, but think about it, the rights of individual states to govern themselves is a precious right not to be lost. The federal government chips away at that right all the time with threats of withholding funds if the state does not do what the feds want, blackmail ! I am so glad you want to stand up and be counted, that's what it is all about. It shows YOU are not just part of the flock. And yes start an activist group, that is how thing's start with small steps. start petitions, hold rallies, picket, let your anger be known. I also feel your desire to vote on everything, however we do not have a true democracy, what we have is democracy by representation, so someone that either you voted for or did not vote for makes the decision for you. As warmhands said check out the Libertarians they have it right, Ron Paul would be a good choice but it will not happen, he runs as a Republican but he is really not one, just a way to get elected. How do you make people stand up ? You cannot, you can show them a different way but will they bite. Or are they to lazy, the materialist world has shown it's ulgy head once more and people don't care about one another, it's like I got mine go get your own and leave me alone. Apathy rules the day now. To try and motivate people is difficult, they are to comfortable in their pathetic little lives to give a damn. However you are right something must be done, I for one just don't know how to do it with what we have to work with these days, People just seem to have no heart anymore. However YOU hold to your convictions and do what you can to spread the word, STAND UP AND BE COUNTED you flock of sheep look around and see thing's for what they are, not just what you have.

    Peace
