Are drugs a requirement to being a hippy?

I kind of object to the thought that in order to be a hippy, you have to smoke pot or do other types of drugs. Am I the only one?

 

alot of hippies dont touch drugs of any kind

its all about choices and theres many ways to choose to express hipness
some of the highest hippies i know never touch anything

 

I dont think there are any real rules about being a hippy, other than being aware you are one. Doing drugs is something that hippies sometimes do, but not every one is the same. Some hippies are activists, some arent, some hippies are musicians, but not all. Mostly its about being yourself.

 

no, being a hippie is all about the mindset, although the drugs are super fun!!

 

I do find the drugs take the edge off the oppression of being anti-establishment lol

a hippy that doesn't smoke is like a greaser who doesn't own any leather. not saying it doesn't happen, just saying when's the last time you met a vegan greaser.

Yea you do. Just because all of you don't choose drugs or you don't think its a requirement, the stereotype is one based off of drugs and peace. Since the question is about a culture group, I'm going with "Yes" Just like in order to be "hxc" you have to wear girl pants. You don't really have to wear those pants, there's no requirement. But regardless its the stereotype and its how people identify and group you.

I don't know but there are a lot of people that do drugs that are not hippies.

As everyone else says, it's a matter of personal choice. The lifestyle isn't made up of a checklist and if you don't fit the requirments you can't be in the clique, that would be hypocrysy. So No, drugs aren't needed. What IS needed is to just be yourself and if someone tells you to act like someone youre not, you probably shouldnt hang around them anyway.

"hippie" means different thing to different people. in the 60s it most definitely included drug use. Today more people think of themsleves as hippies, seems most used drugs in the past and some no longer do so.

 

Of course not...drugs are a personal choice..just like whether to eat meat ...or be spiritual or a realist.....its all a matter of choice. Drugs dont make you a Hippy....

well u dont need drugs to be a hippy ...but once u do drugs....something in ur mind kinda makes u go into hippy mood even more..i remenber i wanst even close to beying a hippie then i started doing pot...then..coke..then X..DXM..Shrooms..and salvia...and now IM REALLY A HIPPIE!.........i gotta get a job lol...beying a hippie is just basically beying peaceful,chilled out, and understanding...and smelling bad..thats all
