Apparently, I'm now "Country & Folk"

    Something that amused me today...

I'm playing as a solo act in a band night at my college soon. I sing and play electric guitar, some of my own songs and covers of Dylan, Donovan, Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, that kinda thing.

Today the organisers put up some new posters around the college, and, to my suprise, the night will apparently include "a variety of music from Rock & Roll to Country & Folk," the Country & Folk part refering to me.

When I asked about it, I was told that my style of music isn't really very rocky, and the organisers felt that simply calling the event a "rock night" would constitute advertising under false pretences. So someone's decided that I'm "Country & Folk."

Not exactly what I'd call myself, even though I do have some folk influences. But in any case, I thought it was rather funny. :)

Yeah, folk rock sounds about right to me. I was a little disturbed by the "country" part. Country music always gives me images of bluegrass bands and people like Dolly Parton singing cheesy love songs, and I don't really do anything like that.

It is indeed...any favourites? Appart from maybe Dylan and Donovan I like the Byrds, Steeleye Span, Lindisfarne, Fairport Convention and a few more.

The Incredible String band ain't bad...do Jethro Tull and the Mamas and the Papas count as well?

Strangely enough, while I was sitting in on a meeting involving the band night, someone asked if there was going to be any music playing between bands. I asked if they wanted to borrow any CDs, and a friend immediately responded: "We don't want any hippy music, John!"

Lol...I love how Pink Floyd could be described as Country & Folk.

I'm getting this horrible picture in my mind...with cowboy hats. And scenes from Deliverance. And the record, Animals. Oh wow. o.o
