i hiked from NH to NJ. Not much, but I plan on hiking the whole thing in this life time. good luck Willy!
Booboo! I flagged you on WB, been busy the last two months though... I'm SOBO from Harper's Ferry one week from tonight! I have transport from Baltimore to HF, then will get a pickup at whatever trail crossing I can arrange Monday afternoon. This is my first section in two years, I'm geared up and finally in good shape. Anyone in the Baltimore/DC area who wants to come along, please PM me!
I've hiked quite a few sections, someday i'm gonna do a thru-hike......would like to do the PCT one day as well...
There's a good book about it. I think it's called Into the wood or Into the wild, anyway, on the cover you see a bear in the AT. The story is about 2 dudes doing the whole thing. Really good book and you hear about the real nature of this path wich isn't just peace as many may think.
I hiked the Rone Mtn. area across the two balds on the NC and TN line a couple of times. I have always had a dream to hike the whole thing though. Peace be with you!!!
Okay I was wrong about the book title, it's called "A walk into the woods". Really good book, not small and covers many aspects of this trail in very different ways. You really shoud read it
A Walk In The Woods was a nice read, but Bill Bryson (the author) embellished quite a bit and left out a few important facts when he wrote it. He never finished his thru hike, he got off the trail several hundred miles short of Katahdin. He also slack-packed (had someone in a van carrying most of his stuff and resupplying him) and he skipped portions of the trail that he claims he hiked. These are fact supported by people whom he met on the trail. If you're going to write a book about thru-hiking the AT you should probably thru hike it. He also spent far too much time poking fun at Southern people. We're not all slack-jawed yokels and racist rednecks as he would have you believe. So it's not a fair representation of the AT. Jan Curran's "A Journey Of Discovery" is a better book by someone who thru'd three times. And Earl Shaffer and Ed Garvey, both old-time thru hikers wrote great books too. Just one hiker's opinion. So... who wants to thru with me in '09?
i agree with zoomie on jans book bein a better book overall,,, there are also several other ones out there that are pretty good reads on the trail and trail life..., .. as a side note last spring i traveled for several hours with ,,, oops i forgot his name,,,, he has thru hiked n has hiked sections for last 27 yrs,,,, those who have read books on the at know who i am speaking of... awesome dude... i sooooo wanna thru hike,,, just dunno if i will ever get the chance i need to take the time to doit>>
Ah shit man... I didn't know this! Fuck him and fuck his book than. Still, the book was fun to read... Damn...
Dilli, did you mean Dan "Wingfoot" Bruce? Please tell me you didn't mean him. As hikers go, he's not a very nice person. I'm hoping that Baltimore Jack Tarlin will come in off the trail someday and write a book about it. He's been on the trail almost year round for 20+ years and he's a very eloquent writer.
lol i am not positive zoomie, what his name was that name doesnt ring the bell it should though either, ...,,, it slipped me mind ,, i was stressed lol,,, but he from upstate ny area, early 50s tall n well he was hairy but had just come off trail i believe a professor at a college n on break hikes pieces of the trail each year....
i met this guy i dont know his name he was trying to break the record hiked with just a small day pack. and met a van every couple of days. was a real asshole picking fights if someone wouldent give up shelter space! finaly he apparently got kicked off. would that be the wingfoot you were talking about zoomie? i forget the year, same year as the minnassota gathering. hey booboo! how ya been! i missed traildaze this year ahhwell! peace!
It wouldn't surprise me, but I don't think wingfoot has thru'd since around 2000 and I don't think he's ever slackpacked. He's a little more honest than that. He's also very politically conservative and that just doesn't mesh well with hiking conservationists. And guess what? Outside of GSMNP there is ZERO priority in AT shelters. None. So when someone tells me I have to go, they can just fuck right off. (I don't use shelters anyway, I carry my own and stealth camp, even in the Whites).
ya this was 90 mabey 91 i think lol dont want to pu a bad name on anyone unjustly but ya this guy was an %# and know i didnt give it up! mostly i did my tent but sometimes that shelter was wonderful after a long day! strap it on and go in the morn! peace!
From what I understand the best parts of the AT are on the Northern and Southern ends, where the mountains are, with some looong boring stretches in between. I've spent some time back packing the AT in Georgia and the Smokies in Tennesee when I lived down that way. For the past 15 years I've been back up here in the Northeast, and I've done stretches in the Whites in New Hampshire, the Greens in Vermont, and sections in Maine. I'd have to say the summit of Katahdin was the highlight of my AT experiences. I've thought of doing an end to end trek along the Long Trail in Vermont, which is about a month long commitment all along mountain ridges. I can't ever see myself doing the entire AT, but my hat's off to those who do.
