    I think it's awful.

Lots of studies back up the idea that it reduces sexual enjoyment and performance.

Also... who are we to decide whether a baby who is defenseless and unable to make the decision itself, should have a part of its natural body cut off?

I think it's terrible and should not be allowed even for religious reasons unless the person is over 18 and consents.

Does anyone else agree with me on this? :)

When you say "actively oppose" what does that entail?

When it comes to male circumcision I have no problem with it and feel the decision should be left to the parents. There are so many studies that point so many different ways when it comes to enjoyment and performance, each with its own bias.

Oh erm, I don't mean I do anything regularly to oppose it, but if there was a petition I would sign it, and if I heard that somebody was planning to circumcise a baby even for religious reasons I wouldn't keep quiet!

Because I think it's wrong... you know, to mutilate someone else's body against their own free will.

Ahh, ok, I understand. So you're not on picket lines or anything, if there even are picket lines.

I think "mutilate" is a very strong word for what is actually happening. We're talking about the removal of a couple centimeters, at most, of skin.

I was also wondering how you actively oppose it. I was hoping for picket signs or maybe just you standing in the hospital yelling at people.

As someone with a vagina I don't really have an opinion one way or another. I think there are plenty of studies to back up both sides of the coin. Esthetically I prefer circumcised.

I totally agree with you, it shouldn't be done on babies who have no say in the matter.

It is not standard procedure here in the Netherlands to circumcise your baby. Most people here seem to find it a bit strange that it is done so massively in the US. But yeah, it's up to them..

I didn't circumcise my son. I think its a pretty barbaric and archaic practice.

When we were in the hospital changing my son's diaper the day after he was born the nurse on duty said it was awesome we didn't get him circumcised because it really causes them a lot of pain.

I don't really see how it does, setting aside the fact that it isn't something that is even measurable. Anesthetics are used during the operation, and it heals within about a week.

anesthetics are used during testicle removal too

    and it heals

would you like to volunteer? :)

oh wait..i have a better idea...lets do it without your permission :)..just because we think you'll look better that way

My son was circumcised, and I have no regrets about it. I really have no opinion on the matter. His dad was extremely pro circumcision, and I didn't think a little piece of skin was worth a battle.

I'm not trying to thread jack, but I'm curious. For people who are extremely opposed to "mutilation," how do you feel about piercing baby girl's ears? In Hispanic culture, it's common to have it done at the hospital after birth. My little girl doesn't have hers done yet ( she's 1), but I plan on getting it done soon.

Yes, there are plenty of people that actively oppose circumcision, they're called intactivists. Just look up organizations like Intact America, NOCIRC, and The Whole Network just to name a few.

Circumcision should (and will) be ended because it is wrong and there is no medical reason for it.

I don't think that's as bad because it heals and doesn't affect any sensations and so on.

I still wouldn't do it to someone though. It's not my body so it's not my choice.

Yes but... I'm not female but I still oppose making permanent changes to a woman's body at any age without her consent o_O

    I'm still human.

haha post of the thread :)

Im not fixing to do it to my hypothetical children. Same with religion and alot of other things, they get to paint their own pictures. Traditionalism isn't my way.

It really is more to do with making choices for one's own body and not other people's. I have no problem if somebody wants to cut off their own foreskin or really any part of their own body as long as they are sound of mind.

But it's doing it to somebody ELSE without their consent that I have an issue with.

Yes it's only small, but so is the clitoris, for example.

And yes it's only skin, but it's not your own skin lol

Circumcisions heal also. I'm not afraid to say that I'm not knowledgeable enough on the pros and cons of circumcisions to make an educated decision either way. It's never been a choice I've been faced with. Now if I got pregnant and found out I was having a boy I would jump into that research and learn everything I could to decide what I would want to do. My husband is circumcised so I'm sure that is what he would want to do but I would do research on my own. That's just not something that I've been faced with yet and I would want to learn about all the health factors that go into it either way.

As far as the ear piercing thing goes. I don't know if I would pierce my babies ears. Not that I care either way and I certainly don't judge people that do. I just think I would let my daughter wait until she was older to decide if that was something she wanted and she would also be old enough to take care of them. Ear piercing is more aesthetic so that is something that could be done at any time.

I've know circs to go wrong. More in hospital than by mohels.
Im in a tradition that calls for it.
Thus, I had a no circ order in my birth plan.

Funny thing when you are a young but looks underage mom, they go to the dad, even with your plan in place.
My son was cut in hospital.
So, he didn't even get his proper welcome to the tribe, and I'd found a stick and prick mohel who would have left 98 percent of the foreskin in place. Not easy.
    (Dad was Xtian)

He was sedated, and had trouble nursing for the rest of the day. Pretty important at 16 hours old.

I say circs should be done consciously. Know why you are or are not choosing it. What aftercare or cleanliness care will be needed.

And if you have a foreskin, know how to clean it, be you five, fifteen or fifty.

But it's not UP to us :(

If I had a child I wouldn't make changes to its body because it's not MY body. It's not up to me.
