I love the freedom and have been barefooting for the last 2 summers (The wintery snow is a little much for my footsies to handle). I had no problem with it anywhere ive been until i moved to Vancouver. Now im scared to do it cause i think im gonna step on a needle or something (i already saw a few lying around) Anyone else have places you won't be caught dead barefooting?
my area just went through hurricane frances..theres alot of debris on the ground...best to wear sneakers...outdoors...but inside..they come off
Heyyy, waitaminute, we're always getting told that Canada is a paradise compared to the U.S. -- all the social problems solved, everyone has medical care... could it be that there are crappy things about Canada too?? I haven't really encountered places I "wouldn't go barefoot" around here (S.E. Florida). I suppose I would avoid barefooting in filthy public restrooms, though. As easy as it should be, many guys just can't seem to aim where they pee well enough to keep it off the floor, and I'm just not fond of stepping in that, supposedly "sterile" or not... April, I dunno how bad you got hit where you live (I don't know what part you live in) but in West Palm Beach, where I am, I walked down my street to the Intracoastal Waterway seawall yesterday and all the debris I saw was mostly tree limbs. I wasn't worried about the fact that I was barefoot. I saw others who were, too. It's the best way to deal with puddles (as long as the puddles are not so deep you can't see junk on the bottom, I guess). Blue skies, -Jeffrey

Haha I forgot that one. You'd think us guys would be able to hit our targets at close range
Ditto Oh and public toilets (bathrooms). I've to many that grossed me out whilst wearing shoes. (one in Italy had almost an inch of muddy water over most of the floor) Really wouldn't want to walk through that shoeless.
I've been to Canada a number of times and didn't see any 'No Shoes No Service' signs. The atmosphere over there is more open and relaxed than in the U.S. In Ontario I believe it's legal for women to go topless if it's not done with the intent to offend people. They are more open to activities such as nude sunbathing and going topless. In general, Canada doesn't suffer from the legal and ideological hangups that those in the U.S do. http://www.religioustolerance.org/nudism1.htm There are people in the U.S. who are supportive of the freedom to go barefoot, nude, or topless, yet many of these same people will proudly vote for politicians who are against all of these freedoms. It's a rather confused state of self-contradiction.
The only time I don't go barefoot and don't really mind the fact that I'm not barefoot is when i'm going to the football. I'm so caught up in the excitement of the game and the buildup and even the postmatch drink etc. that i don't really feel burdened by wearing shoes, as that is the one time when even my hot feet can't distract me. Having said that when I went to the plymouth away game last April, it was so hot that as soon as the game was over I took my trainers off and made the entire return journey from Plymouth back to Reading, barefoot (ok, it was all on a train). The fact that we lost and missed out on the league title that game probably had something to do with it too. Snow isn't something I can handle for long periods of time, but it's not as if I avoid it at all costs, i just enjoy it until I feel I've had enough, which is usually after 10-15 minutes. I don't understand what it is about public toilets that put people off going barefoot. You're walking around town all day, picking up all sorts of dirt and filth off the streets but don't mind (and why should you, after all?). And then you walk into a public loo where there might be a bit of urine on the floor or whatever and suddenly it's a problem! Why? Urine is not only perfectly sterile and therefore safe, but it's actually a useful cleaning agent. In medieval and renaissance times in scotland they actually used to clean and bleach their sheets by hanging them over the privy as the ammonia in the urine would clean and bleach the sheets. Yes, of course it smells etc, but it's not as if you're stepping in puddles bathing and marinading your feet in urine until they're smelling of it. Do your feet smell of oranges if you step in a bit of orange juice that you might have spilt on the kitchen floor? I think not. Urine is only dangerous if you drink it. And there are plenty of other things that you wouldn't eat or drink that you wouldn't mind treading in barefoot, like mud, or grass, or whatever. Don't forget that skin is waterproof as well. The urine that you might step in would actually be doing you a favour as it would kill off and microbes that you might have picked up from wherever you walked before. It's perfectly safe and healthy!
