When I grew up, being a hippie was a state of mind, not a method of dress or even a fixed political agenda. Some of us have now gotten rid of the long hair, work as doctors, lawyers or CPAs but still hold the independence of thought necessary to remain a hippie at heart. Are there any other corporate hippies out there?
Actually, I'm pretty sure this just makes you a tool. But don't feel lonely, because there are lots of tools around.
Hi Texas Rob...I'm not a corporate hippie, but I hear what you are saying...and I know some folks that would agree that they are much the same way as you say you are. It truly depends on what is in your heart, and like it or not, some mainstream folks will tend to listen to someone who seems to walk the mainstream walk (at least in appearance)...a lady I know who very much incorporates the hippy ideals, but works in corporate America says that she would never have been able to put across some of her more liberal, peace-loving, "society that works for all" ideas were it not for her very conservative appearance...the appearance that hides a very liberal, earth centered heart and spirit. I believe there is room for us all!!
yes i know of a couple,, however i cant handle there attachment to babylon,,therfore,,we rarely spend much time together anymore..
Sus -- That's precisely my point. Some folks -- like Spooner -- may view an individual like me as a "tool" (whatever that is). Frankly, that attitude is no different than the ridiculous views of mainstream america who automatically criticize someone because of their dress, long hair, or because they have tatoos or piercings. Marketing and packaging are real -- like it or not. "Corporate Hippies," oxymoronish as it might sound, have an opportunity to spread views about freedom, lifestyle and the environment.
Hippie Hillbilly -- Friends are friends -- regardless of what they do for a living or what they wear to work. I'm sure they would appreciate keeping in contact with you and your family. I've always been impressed with your efforts in Georgia. Keep updating your site.
Man my brother dont leave babylon anymore,, even tho we met with him in college,, spendin weekends an holidays vacation etc.. in the woods next door.. He is still loved as i feel i am as well,, we still stop by his place in babylon every couple months,, its just strange.. we slept there last fall an it wernt real restfull,,granted there was a lotta shit goin on,, but still,, aint our thing,,not even for 24 hours...
I hear what you're saying. Kinda like that guy who was interviewed on CNN Friday night. A swell guy. Probably thinks of himself as a self-proclaimed hippie... down in the Crescent City "doin' his own thing". He'd gone down to New Orleans to help folks out. He told CNN that he was a licensed psychiatrist. He was down there to counsel the deranged, the damaged, and the socially decimated. To hammer his point across he had a GLOCK strapped to his hip, cowboy style. A FUCKING GLOCK! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME SELF-PROCLAIMED GENTLE HIPPIE-PROFESSIONAL? A Glockmeister? What life lesson was he out to impart? "If at 1st you don't succeed - blow their fucking brains out!!!!" Ohhhhh well... He not busy being born is shit outta luck:
omg, this person has a real job and has actually done something with their life besides sit around and smoke weed all day while worshipping little kiddie "hippie" trends! what a poser
Texas Rob - I don't mean to belittle your noble endeavors in maintaining the independence of thought necessary to remain a hippie, etc. I salute you and I remain forever grateful to you for all the work you did in helping to keep Bush out of the White House. It was a gamble but unfortunately the casino was rigged. We ran a good game but the crooked bastards switched dice on us. Here's another good ol' boy who's maintained the independence of thought necessary to remain a hippie at heart:
Actually, I'd call you a tool because you're 45 and still so pathetic you need to identify with a label that was cool when you were 9 years old. And then to add to that heaping mound of stupidity, you don't even follow the stereotype. You're no better than the suburban white kids who dress like gangstas, but at least they have an excuse for it (because highschool and intelligence rarely go together). Here's an idea for you: fuck labels. You might be righteous left-winger. Maybe you go to work baked. There might be a Grateful Dead cd in the car. But you're far from a hippy. Give up the bullshit and be a real person.
Can capitalism and hippiedom coexist? Is it wrong to sell something for a profit? Can a hippie be a leader in a profit-driven environment? Is the bottom line the place where evil begins? Would it be OK to be a stock broker if you could wear cargo shorts, tie-dyed T, and sandals? I don't see what's so heinous about an accountant. They just count shit. How's that antithetical to peace, love, and understanding?
Spooner -- You have no knowledge little life experience to be passing judgment on me. Finish school. Go to work, take care of your family and love your neighbors. I fail to see anything wrong with trying to work with the system. The approach you advocate hasn't worked. Mahatma -- You've got a lot of displaced anger. Too bad.
Spooner - sorry..didnt quite get your analogy between Texas Rob and white surburban gangster kids?.. but let me analyse this.... he holds the 'hippie' mind set... he might be a righteous left-winger, he might go to work half baked. and there might even be a Grateful Dead cd in his car... hmm... let me think... ..yep..... that pretty much would make him a hippie at heart... even minus the going to work half baked... and as for corporate hippies?... i thought that just about perfectly summed up how a lot of 'old' hippies moved on in life... and thank God they did. Ok so some of us hit the tail end of the original Hippie era... and yes it encompassed an alternative lifestyle rejecting conventional standards... but it encompassed more than just the alternative lifestyle.. it was the extreme liberalism that was the key to their independant thinking.. and some of us still hold on to those values today..taking them into the corporate world AND making a difference.. and with more impact than someone with your bigoted outlook could ever hope to achieve. Hippie... its just a word.... no big deal... its not cool.. its just a word to describe a set of values... its the VALUES that are cool.. and it doesnt matter if your hair is long or short.. or if your clothes are alternative or if you live in an alternative community... those are just trappings that say 'hey..look at me... i'm different.' and just because you look like a hippy and spend your life half baked.. that doesnt automaticaly qualify you as one either. but then from your post Spooner... i somehow wouldnt expect you to understand that..!
