I really loved Catcher, but the setting in the 50s didn't do much for me. Is there any books that have similiar themes to Cather (i.e. coming of age, being your own person, not being a follower, etc...)that are set in a different time period? 60s-70s...80s? Peace!
I read this one book called Speak, it was really good, its about this girl that gets raped, and then she has no friends, and she realizes what person she is, its quite good
Yeah, I really was looking for some more books like Catcher in the Rye....that book THE BELL JAR was kinda like it...but I don't know, it wasn't that good. She was like depressed but for like no reason, it just came out of nowhere. And personally I thought it was kinda boring. But yea, Catcher in the rye was good!!! I want to read some like that , that takes place in the 50s,60s,70s...?
If you likes Catcher in the Rye try some of salingers other books like nine short stories or Franny and Zooey. They are not exactly like Catcher in the Rye. There is not as much of a plot but they still resonate with the themes introduced in Catcher.
Hmmm...good idea, Tub...I've not checked out any of Salingers other works, I should. Foxey, Speak sounds interesting, too...I think I'll have to check that out too.
Hey guys...thanks for the sugestions thus far...can't wait to find some time to check some of these books out!
The perks of being a wallflower is a book that i have not personally read but have heard good things about and that it is alot like cather in the rye. But i think the main character might b a girl but i really am not srue.
check out The Rule of the Bone its about a kid who leaves home, smokes herb, goes to jamacia pretty similar, its a coming of age booki i forget who it was by tho its rele good
omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! u guys have no idea how much i loved THE CATCHER IN THE RYE.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we had to read it in sschool, and therefore was forced to analyze it so completely there was nothing left unknown about . after understanding everything, the multipul plots, and sybolism and the different character developments, espeically holden himself, were just amazing to me. i have never, and i dont think will ever, have a book touch me so drastically... i love the book so much i want to name my son holden (it IS a cool name lol) as for the time period, i sorta think its nice in the 50s, especially when looking at how Holden was discusted with the world then, and wished for children to stay innocent from things. it was cool cus the things that were horrible to him, like the word "fuck" , prositutes, guys who just use girls, and girls who get abused, were all big problems back then too...idk i found it nice to see a perspective of all that stuff in a different time period. sorry i wrote so much, i jsut LOVE the book to no end! lol everyones friend madison:sunglasse
Yeah, I *love* Holden's perspective on the world...I read it for school, too, so I did a lot analysis, as well. Good book to do that with, thuogh, because there is no *right answer*... We had a big discussion about how Mr. Atolini was patting Holden on the head while he was sleeping, and what we thoguht it meant...if he was making a pass at Holden, or just being fatherly, or what...be interesting to hear some other people's interpretations on that. Our English teacher said she really was kind of unsure of it herself...
omg!!! lol we had a huge discussion on this too haha and the outcome was the same. no one knew if he was making a pass or being fatherly...it was really up for debate, u no? and in the end my teacher said the same, that he was undecided, and really wasnt sure. i personally think he was just being fatherly, but thats just me
i personally loved his little sister Phoebe... she was so cute...and so mature for her age. we discussed her character a lot in class too
THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER! its great and it is very similar to catcher in the rye. its main character is named charlie and its set in the 90s. sounds like the perfect book to me
I have never read Catcher in the Rye but if you want to read an excellent book about trying to find yourself in a oppressive socitey I suggest you check out George Orwell's 1984. I have to say this is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. It is definatly one of my favorites.
RULE OF THE BONE is by Russelll Banks and that's the book i was going to suggest also! it's a little more edgy than catcher but i read it a little too young and thought it was bad ass!
