About three weeks ago, after much thought and research, I decided to dread my hair, the natural way.

I guess my question is...how often do you wash it? I haven't combed out my hair in these three weeks, but I've washed it every three days because it gets REALLY oily, but only washed it with natural and non-scented shampoo. Is that too often?

Are there ways you can style it or creative ways to "do it" while the dreads are "growing"?

Any other suggestions when growing them naturally?

are you back combing at all?

Wash them say every coupole of days if you can rather than every day and i recomend using a shampoo which has no oils in. Try getting one designed to dry your hair out.

wile mine where first growing (and even now quite often) i went big into head scarfs/bandanas.

good luck and post some piccies :)

I'm not sure if I want to back comb. I figured I'd let them grow out on their own. The backcomb technique looks like it could damage my hair. I want it to be natural, as I am a very natural person. I wanted to avoid hair products and anything that would be a stress on my hair.

Should I backcomb? Does it just make it faster? I'm not going for speed, really...

i don't think a lil bit of backcombing wold hurt... don't do it to hard or tigh cuz it can rip/break your hair! how do they look so far???

basicall dreads ruin your hair anyway. once you have the dreads you will be spending time ripping them appart from each other when they all try to merge into one (painfull at first) and back combing i did just at first to ssection them into their dread sections.. give them a little nudge in the right direction since then theyve gone their own way. otherwhys as someone sayd its takes many years before they form dreads. It takes longer if you have fine straight hair (like me) too.

In these three weeks, I've already noticed how my hair is sectioning off all by itself. I can see where the dreads are going to form and everything. I like to watch the process, it's really interesting. I don't think I mind waiting months or years for it to form all by itself...I think it will be interesting to see the progress.

Does it bother the process by putting my hair in a ponytail? It's quite long, so I need to pull it back for work.

When you made them didn't you use those waxes?I want dreadlocks too,but I can't find the wax.And my hair is very long,so I'm afraid it won't look fine.

I'm going for dreads from now on. I've been giving this some good thought and I think it's time.

I just dreaded my hair recently and it's starting to well, undread...

My friend and I back combed all the sections really well and it looked pretty good at first, just really frizzy. But now it's gone from good to horrible, and almost to the point where you can't tell it's dreaded anymore. I don't really know why it's doing this, I haven't done anything to it.

    Anyone have suggestions?
Fleassy, how'd you get yours to stay like that at first?

Anyway, good luck with the whole natural thing..
Sorry I don't have any advice. I'm having enough trouble doing my own, lol.

Staples dont panick SERIOUSLY!! if you want ill give you a lowdown of my dreads process *goes to find pics*

    First day
    [IMG]
very thin and ropey, not done very well.

Anyway they undreaded themselfs quite a bit in the next few months and thickened themselfs up... however they did look like a mop of messy hair, nothing more. id say about 2/3 months into it is its WORST looking point.

as you can see itjust looks like a mop of messy hair. but i kept playing with them, twiddling them in my fingers (no wax!) and also bought juniper soap from a natural soap company which dried the hair helping it to lock. and 6 months in it looked like this
    [IMG]

they still arent perfect and wont be for many years... but i like their wildness. basically just keep playing with them. Your back combing was just to guide them in the right ddirection, they will un ravel and sought themselfs out thow they want to do it on their own. Just play with them lots ... let them know they are loved :)

and hopefully one day well all have beautifull dreadys like sprout or inbloom :p

    Thanks so much Fleassy!

    That really helps alot..
I was afraid I'd have to give up on my dreadies and comb them out since they won't stay, but I'll just have to be patient for a few months.

Yours look quite lovely, by the way.
