    city of such history
it's for you i'll always long
the river where i was born
it calls to me, the carillon
    here, careening in between
so many years i've never seen
this is where i will always belong

somehow i remember when the river rose
and swallowed the streets and the valley homes whole
i recall two brothers with eyes on the sky
one turned to the other and asked "why not fly?"
i remember the others, how they couldn't see
    within brown skin, the poetry
    there is never anything that
    one cannot surpass
    not one question goes unanswered
    if honestly asked
not here in the city on the river of light
this, the city raised in flawless flight
the city where the son of slaves
can share the gift of deeper sight
this, our city of the impossible task

the carillon is on the horizon
    counting down the hours
from beneath it, in the distance
see the rising of the towers
    this along the river
the river where i was born
this along the river that surrenders to the storm
this along the river over which the sun first rose
Dawn offered to the poet everything she knows
this along the river where the brothers both would ride
with the dreams of all the artists soaring at their sides
this along the river that had burst beyond the banks
when the days became darker and the skies had gone blank
to reach behind the boundaries to claim nature's precious dream
despite the other worlds she would unravel at the seams

although the spirit of my city
    it cannot be contained
    in anything that's proven
to bring her wealth or fame
her riches lie in rock and ruin
not hardly found today on earth
from back when the native peoples held
the truth of The Great Miami's worth
    nurturing them again and again
    through hardship and disaster
they lived and thrived at the river's side
and their village lived on after

    and a thousand years forward
when all the children gather around to see
    the city on the river
it instills within them the same brave dreams
    proving again that there's nothing
    that one cannot rise above
when set free into the valley
    of the brightest shining love

    city of such history
it's for you i'll always long
the river where i was born
it calls to me, the carillon
    here, careening in between
so many years i've never seen
this is where i will always belong

this is for my hometown, dayton, ohio, the wright brothers, paul laurence dunbar, and the memory of those lost in the 1913 flood. "the river where i was born" is the great miami, because i was born in the hospital on the river, where the lake erie navy rowed the sick and injured during the 1913 flood. it's now closed, so underneath it all, it's in memory of that institution as well. Sunwatch Village is what i'm talking about when i'm talking about the natives a thousand years ago, and the carillon is the carillon bells, also on the river. god, i love that river...

I love ur feeling in this poem, the way u write, expresses every interest provoked detail to yet more detail,
example is: "this along the river
the river where i was born
this along the river that surrenders to the storm
this along the river over which the sun first rose"
    -used from text

I like ur descriptions and overall feeling in this poem, nice work, keep it up, nice tribute to ur town.

This is the part of the piece that caught my eye the most, thought provoking, deep, and well written. peace
