Does anyone wash their hair with anything other than a conventional shampoo and conditioner? If so, what do you use? Id really love some ideas

Im vegan so im currently using Original Source shower products. The problem is my hairs becoming all dry and brittle and there are still so many ingredients i dont recognise and really, sound quite scary. Id like to use something simple and natural, save some money and have gorgeous hair!

    So any ideas are welcome

    Thank you!

My hair is happy just being washed with water... you *can* get it clean just with water, and my hair LOVES cold water...
And I have extremely curly, frizzy hair. Cold water is the #1 thing that keeps the frizz down, and keeps it from getting all dry and stuff. Might take a few days - a week for it to really start showing, I noticed in the Summers from swimming in the rivers and creeks (snow running off the mountains, VERY cold, heh) and how when I had dreads, they always looked/felt awesome after I got soaked in the rain or anything.

Ida makes awesome 'poo and soap bars. Some are vegan (look out for honey, egg or goat milk, her only animal ingredients).
I bet she'd ship internationally, or use her ingredients as a start for a Europe-based crafter, including yourself.

Dr. Bronners for shampoo! Olive oil conditioner, as get_up mentioned will work fine.

Dr. Bronners, baking soda, and vinegar have all done well for me. Usually I use Dr. Bronners and then a little bit of vinegar when I am rinsing.

I have heard good things about clay for hair washing. If you've ever used a clay face mask, you've probably experienced the somewhat 'lathering' effect that it has. I only learned about it recently so I haven't yet tried it myself, but it makes sense that it would work and I plan to try it in the future.

Yes, it is normal to have a transition period coming off of the strong surfactants in shampoo. But also, examine your technique--to make up for the lack of bubbles in baking soda, you need to scrub your scalp thoroughly to get it really clean.

I have every limp, flat, fine, oily, stick straight hair that just hangs and is oily enough to look gross within 8 hours of washing it. What can I use that's Vegan, natural, and cuts the grease gives some body?

You might find the following a little helpful:

    -------
The most basic routine uses just warm water and baking soda. But there are many variations according to your hair needs as well as your desired outcome.

You just need to get past the initital shock, prejudice about being unclean, brainwashing that suds = clean, and realise that your hair will look and feel different. I liken the look and feel to when you give your hair a deep conditioning treatment; a little heavier and smoother, not fluffy or 'squeaky'.

    Basic Routine

    1-2 tbsp Baking Soda
enough warm water to make a liquidy paste

Wet hair with warm water (try not to use very hot water on hair), and massage your scalp rigorously with your fingertips and even nails. This gets the blood circulating (excellent to stimulate growth, as well as proper blood supply to hair), as well as basic cleansing for dry skin.Rub the soda mixture into your root hair.Don't forget under your hair and near the temples if you have long hair. You want to get to the areas nearest the scalp that get the oiliest. You can use it all over your hair if it's long, but unless your hair is greasy all over you'll probably just end up drying the ends. The baking soda is a mild abrasive and is there to remove oily dirt, not as a general cleanser.Rinse with cool water to close your hair cuticles. (especially usful for those with frizzy hair like me).
Or rinse with diluted ACV (apple cider vinegar) (don't substitute) if your hair is very frizzy, dry or very fine.

You might want to repeat the process if you've let your hair get very dirty and greasy. You'll also need to experiment with amounts to find what works best for you.

But that's really all there is to it. I promise you will have clean hair.

Some people find their hair doesn't look very clean for a week or two as their scalp attempts to adjust to the new regime. I didn't find this myself. I have very long, thick, slightly frizzy/fly-away hair. The soda cleaned my scalp very well.

WARNING! if your hair is frizzy or very fine, baking soda might be terrible for it. Although my hair does clean up, it breaks too. Baking soda is not a good option for me. I've gone down the lemon juice route.
    -------

Copied from an article off my website encyclopedia.

It's important to understand a little about acids and alkalis and to understand your own hair. That way you use what's right for your hair, not just what works for other people. Good luck. :)

ok, if you are out in the wild, and dont want to use any chemicals, use
    SHIVA SHAMPOO!
actually it just means... ASH! just take ash from the fire and wash your hair with it, it takes away dirt and grease (ash can also be used to wash the dishes, works well!)

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but olive oil makes wonderful conditioner. It just take a bit of effort to wash out.

I use Tates Super Protein Shampoo. I get it from a head shot, and its a little expensive, but its worth it. You know what every single ingredient is in it, and if ya don't, they have this little pamphlet that tells you what it does.
They havea website Ithink, but I'm too lazy to look. Google it!

Could you elaborate a bit more on this? I know straight ashes can burn even when not hot because of the caustic nature, but I have heard of people washing their hair with it. I just don't want to melt my face off. Thankies!

What if you want your hair to be fluffy and full? What can you use that's natural that wont add oil? My hair is naturally oily. I have to wash it every day, what do you advise?
