That still doesn't change the fact that news companies play what people want to see, if 10% want to hear about oil spills, and 90% want to hear about Iraq, then Iraq is what will be shown.

That has nothing to do with ANWR or the original post. What's your point?

The original post was about oil drilling in Alaska, then people said that big companies owned media networks, so I said that if more people want to hear about one thing, Iraq for instance, then another, Alaska, then the networks will play that because they will make more money.

I don't buy that. It's the same excuse they invoke to justify the garbage they sell as entertainment. The media doesn't just reflect the culture; it also shapes it.

You don't have to buy it, but it is the truth, networks will show what people want to see, no matter how dumb it is.

I don't deny that they feed consumer demand for mindlessness, but they also foster it.

Maybe in their general programming, with crap reality shows and the like, but networks like Fox are just mouthpieces for the administration when it comes to news. To think otherwise is incredibly naive.

I guarantee you that more people in the US would rather hear about Iraq then Alaska.

You quoted the primary term here, "companies", they are out to make money, if more people will watch news on iraq, then they will play more news on iraq then others, they are still reporting the truth, there are companies with different demographics, in this case, most americans want to know about Iraq

Think about it, 28.3 million people watch American Idol, that's 10 percent of the population, sounds like a money maker to me.

Yes, that is part of it, even though if more people knew of what was happening in Alaska, I'm confident that people would still rather hear of Iraq, nobody is dying in Alaska.

And what the hell are you talking about here, because your incoherent paragraph has no logical order.

When I lived in Alaska in the early 90's I had to search high and low for a politician to vote for who wasn't talking about opening ANWR. I finally found on - just one - who stated he'd work to keep ANWR off limits. He was the Green candidate. Guess who got my vote. And guess which party I vote for when I can find their candidates.

BP said to be under criminal probe
Paper reports that regulators are looking in the oil giant's handling of pipelines in Alaska's North Slope.
    April 6, 2006: 7:58 AM EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. environmental regulators are conducting a criminal investigation into BP Plc's management of pipelines in Alaska's North Slope, the Wall Street Journal said Thursday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the newspaper said the investigation, which has been under way for several months by officials at the Environmental Protection Agency, was expanded to include an early March spill of an estimated 134,000 to 267,000 gallons of crude from a BP-operated pipeline at Prudhoe Bay.

One person familiar with the matter was reported as telling the newspaper that federal investigators are looking at corrosion issues on the ruptured line, as well as others in the area, to determine if BP has committed any violations of the federal Clean Water Act.

The act carries criminal and civil penalties for violations, such as allowing oil to spill into a federal waterway.

BP spokesman David Nicholas in London said that BP has had no contact with EPA investigators since the first days immediately following the March spill but added that the company would cooperate fully if the EPA does contact it.

BP (Research), the world's second-largest listed oil firm by market value, has cultivated a reputation for being the greenest of the oil majors.

But the firm was hit last year by an explosion at its Texas City refinery which killed 15 people and injured 170.

Despite pledging $700 million to compensate victims -- much more than analysts expected -- the firm still faces wrongful death lawsuits and the FBI is investigating possible criminal acts leading to the explosion.

The pipeline investigation is being conducted by the EPA's criminal-investigation division, a person familiar with the matter told the Journal.

If investigators find any violations of the Clean Water Act, they will likely discuss the case with the U.S. attorney's office, which could forward the matter to a federal grand jury for possible prosecution, the person said.

No one was immediately available for comment at the EPA.

The news of the criminal probe comes after Alaska officials said Wednesday they plan to take a new look at how aging oil pipelines are inspected following the BP spill.

Last month Alaska Attorney General David Marquez said BP faces a fine of up to $2 million

Oh and by the way streamlight William Jefferson Clinton a democrat who you may or may not have heard of, sent American troops to more different incursions into more different countries than any U.S. President in our history. You really need to take that Democrats soft on terrorism crap and shove it. We all know about the Republican blame game. Demonizing Democrats isn't gonna get it anymore. Your guy in DC is a major asshole who should be tried and executed for high crimes and treason, and petty theft of the National Treasury. And Cheney and Rumsfeld and Rice and Gonzales should be dangling right next to the bastard.

"[When] corruption.. has prevailed in those offices [of]... government and [has] so familiarized itself as that men otherwise honest could look on it without horror,... [then we must] be alive to the suppression of this odious practice and... bring to punishment and brand with eternal disgrace every man guilty of it, whatever be his station." --Thomas Jefferson to W. C. C. Claiborne, 1804
