Todd Akin, who recently "misspoke" when talking about "legitimate rape", has no clue about the damage his words do to the millions of women who experienced rape. The fact that people with this kind of mindset are creating laws just boggles the mind. Attached is an excellent letter written by Eve Ensler in response to his statements. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eve-en...b_1812930.html
The timing couldn't be worse for the GOP, as it focuses public attention on just how clueless the Republican leadership is about women's issues. Particularly, voters are now taking a closer look at the disturbing similarities between Todd Akin and Paul Ryan, who is less than two weeks into his new role of VP nominee. It is hard to imagine how these men can be so ignorant and out of touch, not living in isolated mountain cabins. Somehow, they think that women are going to vote for them, and their pathetic vision of taking America back to the 1950's, when women had to take orders from men, even about the most intimate and personal aspects of our lives. There have been several threads here this year about the abortion issue, and very few posts expressed support for the most radical and extreme pro-life positions. Paul Ryan is as far to the right on this issue as any politician in Washington, and every voter needs to be aware of it.
What Akin said is no different than the the republican ideology. The cons are just pissed at Akin for exposing the abuse they want to perpetrate on women. The cons want to control women's genitals, and they just voted down a bill in congress to give women equal pay for equal work. The con ideology wants to destroy Social Security, Medicare, welfare, health care, affirmative action, public education, and planned parenthood, which are all on the GOP platform. These are all loser issues for the cons, and they don't want attention drawn to those issues. So now the election is about a liberal ideology that wants to protect those programs vs. the fascist right wing republican ideology. Akin changed the whole dynamic of the election, and that's why the cons are so skeerd. The republican Titanic is going down, and they know it.
I just found out that 31 US states allow convicted rapists to go to court and sue for parental rights! :willy_nilly:
What??? that is messed up! Last thing a woman wants to do is keep seeing the man who raped her, or have her child in a rapists life. No wonder your country is so fuck up! I have never heard anything so outrageous- cutting there balls off would be a better law to follow...
It truly is disgusting, and from what I've read they get the same parental/visitation rights as a normal father would have. IMO this idiot of a 'man' clearly has no idea what rape is. I hate the term 'legitimate rape', any case of rape is legitimate, whether it was like the 'typical' down a dark alley at midnight, or with a friend! Non consensual sex is rape. For some reason it seems that cases of rape don't get treated as crime nowadays, its made out to be the woman's fault for being drunk or wearing short clothes or being out alone. When will people realise that rape isn't the victims fault, it is a disgusting and power thirsty act in whatever shape or form its preformed.
I hear ya lady... to bare a child thru rape must be hard enough but to have to see the scum and let them interact with your baby that is pure madness- i would flee the country never would I let a man like that be around my child!
You are so right MamaPeace. It really sounds like attitudes have not changed much since the mid 70's when I was raped. I am grateful that my rape did not result in a pregnancy. But the experience changed who I was and who I am today. Attitudes like Akin's bring it all back.
Going back to the original point; I have just read that Akin still leads his democratic opponent, Claire McCaskill, by 44% to 43% even after that bunch of bullshit about legitimate rape! Where is the mind of the american voter?
I can't vote in Missouri and do not know the answer to your question. We will find out in November whether or not he wins that election. His party wants to set back women's rights earned over the years as well as many other social programs and issues. It really will depend on the mindset of the people who actually turn out to vote. All I know, from one election to the next, is that my vote tends to cancel out my Dad's.
America has always had lots of terrible people in it, but recently it seems like they have become bolder than at any time since the '60's. I don't normally get into thinking about the idea of divine intervention in weather events, but I have to admit that watching a hurricane bear down on the Republican convention in Tampa is very amusing to me right now. :2thumbsup: Karma can be a bitch. The only situation I can think of where there seems to be room for discussing different treatment for different kinds of rape is in the case of statutory rape. Sometimes, the mother was only a few months under the legal age of consent at the time of conception, and was in a romantic relationship with a guy only a few years older than herself. If she doesn't even regret her actions after she turns 18, that makes her seem like much less of a victim to me than the female in a more typical rape case. If she turns out to be a bad mother for one reason or another, I can see the father wanting to get involved out of genuine concern for the welfare of his child. What is needed in that situation is wise judgment from the court, which seems to be in short supply these days. I don't think that has anything to do with what Akin was talking about.
What the cons are trying to tell America is, When rape is inevitable relax and enjoy it. Bend over and crack a smile, because the cons plan to give America the shaft. Destroy Social Security and Medicare, give the elderly the shaft. Destroy planned parenthood, give women the shaft. Destroy equal pay, really ream women. Destroy food stamps and welfare, give the poor the shaft. Destroy public education, give children the shaft. Let corporations send jobs to China, and give American workers the shaft. When Romney and the other 1%ers only pay 13% in taxes, the rest of America gets the shaft. When cons start their stupid wars, Americans get the bill. The Iraq war was a $3 trillion shaft. And that's cheap compared to the war they plan to start in Iran. That one is going to be a $10 trillion shaft. If you really believe I'm making this up, go ahead and let Romney and the cons control the government. But remember, the nazis promised the Germans a better economy too, and they fell for it.
I don't really know much about politics...but this is seriously scary. America is basically screwed. I'm a woman who takes birth control for medical reasons, so I don't want Romney as president. Plus all of the other anti-woman's rights things. But apparently, if enough Muslims move into a state, they can petition the government to make that state a Muslim state. So basically after all of the states, they turn America into a Muslim nation. And, they can't accomplish that if Obama isn't in office. I got this information from a documentary that I watched a while back. I can't remember the title, but maybe I'll post it if I find it. My point is that neither candidate are worthy options. Neither of them are going to run our country keeping our interest in mind. They'll run it in their own best interest. By the way, my whole thing about Muslims wasn't intended to be racist or anything. But that documentary was pretty freaky and eye-opening. We're doomed. I'm moving to Antarctica or something. lol.
C'mon, you're really gonna buy that one? This is the same kind of propaganda the nazis used against the jews. That has as much chance of happening as the republicans turning Iraq and Afghanistan into a christian society.
Off-topic troll bait, and not accurate. :toetap05: The only relevance of Islam (of the fundamentalist variety) to this thread is that their compassion for rape victims is similar to that of Mr. Akin.
Well sorry it's off topic, but I'm not the only one posting of topic stuff and I'm not one of those trolls. It wasn't meant to be troll bait. If it was, I wouldn't have said it's not meant to be racist or offensive. Watch it and judge for yourself.
My mother always said if you can't say something nice about someone don't say anything at all. or maybe Narnia? good luck on your move. :2thumbsup:
