Advice? Well I've been taking drama classes for five years now and I will say this... be as open as possible. Really let yourself go and feel everything. In acting/drama classes you really can expose yourself to a whole new scale of emotions, be open to them and don't be afraid to show what you feel in everything you do. Be brutally honest and you'll have fun and learn a lot about yourself.
As an act-tor, the golden rule is, erm, there IS no golden rule....though plenty drama tutors/schools will tell you otherwise. Use your imagination and experiences of life's ups and downs, and - if anything - go over the top with any exercises asked of you; this gives the teacher a golden opportunity to 'direct' you, which they just love. Have fun, Toots.
yeah acting is about letting go... get in the moment and character.Don't be scared of what others think of u cuz we actors tend to be a crazy bunch.. just remember you will look a lot better if u get up and look comfortable than you would if u got up and looked scared and nervous-- put all nerves into the performance. Approach it as your most childlike self and definitely leave yourself completely open. I always found myself (my own personality, etc) to be the biggest wall to get over. I'd always feel parts of me coming through any character I was taking on. Other people don't really notice it in performances but I always struggled internally to shut 'me' down completely. I'm not teaching it this year which has me pretty bummed. Nothing like an hour session of make believing!
Try to know yourself and what you can do. Everything a person does sends a message, and knowing how to send the messages can make the difference. Also, soak up everything you can from teachers, they all have something to offer, even if you dont realize it until years later!
^^very true..my acting teacher has already proven herself to be a female figure i can look up to...our first assignment was to memorize and recite Shakespearian sonnet # 29 I was the only one in the class who nailed it word for word she was impressed..more important I really got what the dood was saying..the other half of the assignment was to interperate the sonnet and write our own poem based on it. It was really cool to hear what everyone came up with lots of talent in the class. I enjoy the rhyming pattern of a sonnet so i wrote my poem in sonnet form. Sonnet #29 William Shakespeare When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes, I all alone beweep my outcast state, And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries, And look upon myself and curse my fate, Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, Feature'd like him, like him with friends possesse'd Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope With what I most enjoy, contented least In these thoughts myself almost despising, Haply I think on thee-and then my state, (Like to the Lark at break of day arising, From sullen earth) sings hyms at Heaven's gate For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings That then I scorn to change my state with kings My version Alicia S. The forces bring forth no pleasure People all judge the same My lonliness too great to measure Leads me to loathe my name If only my flesh could compare If only my dreams as vibrant and real Maybe then they would smile-not stare That which brings me joy, lacking most Despite these thoughts so disarming One who loves me comes to mind Instantly, I feel so charming A better place I could not find In me, my love sees incredible things And for that, my altrustic heart sings
