Ok, so I woke up this morning to find my kitten (shadow) being pinned down by my older cat (meeme) and being cleaned "unmercifully".. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen, because all I saw from under meeme was 2 tiny white paws flaying around like he was trying to swim on his back. Of course I went over to them to make sure that she wasn't suffocating him. She wasn't actually doing any harm to him, just trying to clean him. I think she actually wants his fur to stay down, because his fur is almost always sticking up and fluffed out, while her's is smooth and shiny. )
we called that grooming enforcement seems to be some kind of mothering instinct at work, even though we see it in male cats sometimes
yeah its definitely a "parental" instinct that most animals have. I probably would have died laughing, too, if I saw that
I have read on other sites that most older cats won't take to well to kittens, my cat is just the opposite. I got him last week from the pound and not even a day later she started grooming him and showing him places to sleep. She even shares her food with him. My cat meeme is just an oddball I think
i've brought 5 feral kittens into the house this past year without any problems at all, a little hissing but they all calmed down quickly jackie, who is missing an eye and was very sick when i caught her, had no problems at all - nearly everybody mothered her
My Foxy gets groomed all the time by her adopted sister Domino. Sometimes it's "involuntary", but I've seen her actually go up to Domino or their adopted brother Red and offer her head for grooming. I think it's sweet and a form of bonding among them. :sunny:
