this thread is to recommend a book, a movie, and a song to the community. only ONE of each and why book: 'the giver' by lois lowry i just finished reading this book and even though it's a children's book it is so fucking awesome. her insight into a dystopian society that fools its people into thinking they live in a utiopia is just so raw to me. this woman is brilliant and this book touches me and scares the shit out of me at the same time. i mean, genuinely scares me. check it out or let me know if you've read this book. movie: religulous bill maher's documentary on religion. he basically travels around, incurring massive pwnage on religious fanatics. song: 'they schools' by dead prez. some of the lyrics...peep that shit Man that school shit is a joke The same people who control the school system control The prison system, and the whole social system Ever since slavery, nawsayin? In the hallways, the popo was always present Searchin through niggas possessions Lookin for, dope and weapons, get your lessons School is like a 12 step brainwash camp They make you think if you drop out you aint got a chance To advance in life, they try to make you pull your pants up They aint teachin us nothin but how to be slaves and hardworkers For white people to build up they shit Make they businesses successful while it's exploitin us Knowhatimsayin? Book: The Ink Heart series, written by Cornelia Funke If you are in to that kind of thing... I normally am not, but enjoyed them Movie: "Journey to the Edge of the Universe" a National Geographic documentary Watch this while you're high, will blow your mind Song: "The Plot to Bomb The Panhandle" by A Day to Remember They wrote this song while touring through Oklahoma, the video has Ron Jeremy in it teaching this random group of people to hard core dance, pretty tight The drummer is so young, and SUCH A BADASS
book: valley of the dolls by Jacqueline Susann. it's a cult classic. if I described it most of the people on here would dismiss it as a trashy romance novel but it's so amazingly written and totally captivating. way ahead of it's time and full of insanely interesting characters with so many unexpected turns, managing still to keep you believing. movie: I have to say the virgin suicides. To me it's what a movie should be. It's mysterious and beautifully made directed by Sofia Capolla. I've never seen a movie like it. It is told and shot from the outsiders view so it's as if you are part of it. It's peachy and beautiful. It gets me so inspired as you can paint in whats missing. song: amy winehouse-moody's mood for love. yeah yeah she's a crack head but this song came about when saxophonist James Moody was recorded improvising and then lyrics were put to it. It's such a difficult song to sing but wino makes it sound so simple. It's the only version of the song that is from the original piece, other artists have slowed it down or changed it in some ways. I just like songs with a story.
book- watership down...a story of rabbits trying to find a new warren...not nearly as gay as that sounds, there's action, adventure, death, and a pretty sweet rabbit language called lapine- "silflay hraka u embleer rah!" movie- let the right one in...vampire movie song- venus in furs by velvet underground inspired by the book of the same name.
Book: Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Learning to be here, now. Movie: Passengers- Death, revised. Song: Eyes of the world -Grateful Dead WAKE UP to find out that YOU are the eyes of the world.
book: Life of Pi by Yann Martel. This book is an enchanting and profound story of an Indian boy shipwrecked and left on a lifeboat in the company of a Bengal tiger. It's a book about willpower, faith, the unity of religions, and the things people do in desperation. I read it a couple months ago and loved it. movie: Amores Perros - this is a complex and grusome movie about dogfighting and murder. It's in Spanish but you can get it with subtitles. Gael Garcia Bernal is in it. Enough said iggy: song: Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer. I saw these guys (crazy story behind it) at the hi-dive on Broadway in Denver. They're playing ACL here in Austin in Oct. It's basically folk rock. This is a soulful and melodic song with a really good hook. This is a good thread, not just "post your fave song" with random youtube links.
im trying to find the two sequels. ive always thought that the world will be like that some day. maybe not so polite and docile, but definately controlled iggy:iggy:iggy:
great thread :cheers2: ok, a book: Wild by Jay Griffiths. at times i thought, this is a bit wierd, but it was actually an incredibly interesting and though provoking read. really made me want to go out and experience all that the world has to offer and understand the beauty and balance of nature. Movie: American History X. Just love this film and have since the first time i watched it. Thought it was very well done and the ending was beautiful in a strange way. Song: Sometimes by James. So many good memorys of seeing them live with my hubby last year and singing with the crowd at the top of our lungs.
book- The blood ties series by jennifer armintrout... great series my favorite by far movie- monster ...serial killing prositute need i say more lol song- Ordo AB Chao - (Hed)pe .....great fucking song
book - The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test - Classic book by Tom Wolfe about the scene that sparked The Grateful Dead and the counter-culture into full swing that lasted ultimately for 30 years. movie - Into the Wild (only because I used the book for something else). If there was a movie that could sum me up as a person and what I would want to do, this movie nails it to a 'T'. Would want to live my life in solitude in the wild, but rather completely free totally surrounded by people that I love. song - In the same light as my first selection. Here's some tunes to accompany the scene. Grateful Dead - In the Midnight Hour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUsG1on5s_s&feature=related
shite shite too many books come to my mind ummmm... old mans war by scalzi its a good book written in a starship troopers kind of way but bring much more to the table. The authors sense of humor is great and its view on society shows in the book. good read and I usually dont say that for science fiction movie, darn too many once again, must say the evil dead series, army of darkness especially including both endings what happened? by H2O part of the lyrics, fucking real message When it began, for those who don't know It didn't matter how you looked or what you wore to a show Dress codes, FUCK NO! we didn't care About the brand of your jeans and all that shit in your hair But now the biggest part is all about the image and not the art Fashion before passion! And at nights, it makes me mad that I should have to ask: What happened to the passion? (passion!) What the reason for screaming? What happened the music and the message that I love? What happened to the hard work? (hard work!) And why does everybody look the same? What happened the music and the message that I love?
Book - One good Turn by <insert random polish name> a popular science book about the history of the screw, it's probably the best pop-science book i've read, and it was interesting as fuck. It also means you get to be an expert on screws because you have read a book, thus trumping any argument. Film - Princess mononoke just because it's my favourite film, if you haven't watched it because it's animated just fucking watch it. Best film evar. I could have said something clever like a chris marker film but ive kinda already done that with my book. Song - It's pitch dark by MC Frontalot. Probably my favourite nerdcore song and a good introduction to the genre.
I have that book on my book shelf but always forget about it and I agree with your movie choice that film is great and Bernal is sexy, it is a sad movie.
Book-The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle A book all about how learning to live your life in the present and teaches how such practices as meditation can greatly increase your well-being.
Book - Killing Pablo I dunno liked it was about famous colombian kingpin Pablo Escobar theres gonna be a movie about it soon Movie - City of God some brazilian movie with subtitles that is fuckin badass about a group of kids who grow up to become lil gangsters and run this city in Rio De Janeiro worth a watch for real Song - Bob Marley Burnin and Lootin I dunno this song just makes me really chill especially the one with the roots but the original is tight as fuck
