It's been just about 6 weeks since I got my dreads and they are starting to drive me a bit crazy...

There are some dreads with UNBELIEVABLY thin parts, and I'm so scared cause I think they are going to snap off.

The loose hairs... hahah wow, out of control i swear there is more hair not dreaded than is in dreads hahaha!

They keep catching on my earrings and catching on my necklaces and everytime I swing my head I hear *crrk* sound of a hair breaking because it's snagged on SOMETHING...

I dunno man, is it gonna get better? I know dreads are all about patience and I'm happy to wait it out if I know they are going to become tamer but I need to know if they will? Was anyone else ready to rip them off in the first few months?

One thing I have learned (besides that whole 'patients' thing)

Captive bead rings are the absolute best ear jewelry.
I've always worn them, but I can't imagine having my hair being constantly caught on seven earrings poking out ...!

The first week or two, I was SO mad at my hair...I'm sure it will get better for you.

6 weeks isn't even close to enough time for them to start getting better. Your in the shittiest stage of dreads right now and you will be for a little while longer. It will all be over before you know it though.

Thanks all you guys who answered my question! :) I know dreads=patience but I still like to be reassured now and then that everything my babies are going through is normal. Still don't know what to do about the really thin parts, will they thicken up or is there a way to repair them?

(Not so thanks to the patronising guys who have had their dreads soo long they must be gods and me being stressed at 6 weeks is SOOO silly gawsh aren't I silly? How stupid of me to ask them a question or request their help! Hahahaha no instead of offering me advice or reassuring me that my dreads will be fine, I'm told to stick my earrings up my anal passage...)

Ahoy ... do you have any recent pics? It's difficult to picture what you mean by 'really thin parts' ... do you mean thin locks among thicker ones, because that really isn't a problem, chances are that the thinner locks will join up with the thicker ones over time.

Or do you mean that there are different widths to a single lock ... if the locks taper towards the base of the lock, then that's fine, with the natural hair loss process on a daily basis, the thinner areas will thicken up. If you mean that the locks tapper thinner towards the tip, well that's a bit more tricky, especially if the area of the lock closer to the base starts to mature.

It's also difficult to understand what you mean by 'repair', it kind of implies damage. When peeps first saw your locks, a lot of us freaked that they may get damaged from being overworked ... has there been damage done, like hair breaking from crocheting?

On a general note, the best for locks is to do minimal to nothing … of course the cleaning method varies from person to person, but locks is what one’s hair wants to do anyway, but is prevented by brushing, combing, etc … if locks is what one wants, it’s always best to just let one’s hair do what it does best … sure there are different jump start methods, but at some point one has to let go, otherwise a vicious cycle of regular ‘maintenance’ kicks in

It's a funny observation I'll share with you, nijisarr. It seems those who preach patience about hair have no patience for people. Which is ass-backwards in my books.

    ^-Agreed.

Yeah your locks are gonna look straight stupid. I'm at about a month and 3 weeks, and I still think they don't look too hot, haha. For me this is when I started seeing progress, initial locking, etc.
Just chillax, and you'll be alright. If you don't like how many loose hairs there are, what I did was wear a tam for a while and it laid them down for a while. Helps before you go someplace.

Don't worry.... about a thing.... 'cause every little things... gonna be alright! :cheers2:

    thanks donBK

Now that I have had my dreads for a bit, I am beginning to see that maybe the crocheting method isn't good for starting dreadlocks, I think alot of damage has been done, but there is nothing I can do now but treat them really well (I've never done any maintanence or even picked up a crochet hook since getting them, I just clean them and leave them)

Certain parts of single dreads are maturing faster then other parts, for example, one dread I have is tight at the top, tight at the bottom, but really thin in the middle. What I meant by repair is... well what can I do about the thin part?

I'll try and get a more recent picture here as soon as I can get my camera working :)

Ahoy ... Sister, I think it’s a good idea for you to get some pics taken of the locks that could be damaged. I don’t think it’s a good idea for anyone to jump to conclusions, but from what you have described, it sounds like hair was snapped in the middle of your locks and the two parts of the broken hairs have moved up towards the tip and down towards the base of the locks. Are there many locks like this?

Umm, yup, get some pics taken … also I’m not sure if the picture I’m getting in my head is a worse case scenario and way off the mark, but before peeps can suggest anything, pics will be needed … if you would like, just pop them in your profile album, that way only members can see them.

    One Love!
