27 dead, 20 of them children.

So what "meaningful action" can be taken?

What we can do perhaps is check the prevalence of mental retardation in the societies. :(

I don't think they were retarded. They were just evil.
If you do something bad it doesn't automatically mean that you are sick.

That is absolutely true, I assume.

Yet we can't be sure if it is true as we don't know anything.
So it might be false. So we might know something.

We had our Port Author massacre here in Australia some years ago.

The then Liberal federal government was able to take action on the guns issue with some success as the gun lobby is not as strong as it is in the US. There is of course far more involved than the access of powerful firearms to unstable individual.

The capacity for organized and unorganized violence in our ostensibly liberal
    societies is astounding.

I think, ^ this is true as well. Perhaps I was false in saying that it was true. ;-)

So we have proven that we know something because we don't know anything.

  12. There are crazies and weirdoes in every society and it is not always easy to spot them. The thing about the US and it's gun laws is that it is relatively easy for these people to "arm up" and go on a killing spree. I don't know the solution but I sure as hell know that there would be less incidents if it was more difficult to access weapons.

You can make a bow. Or use a stick. They could have just walked there and beat thosechildren to death with metal pipes.

Again, if anyone really wants to do it, he will.

fly is right though, the other shootings it is true that if they couldnt get the guns they would very unlikely be able to kill more than a couple people before they get bum rushed. although the columbine shooting...they did have bombs so if that was all they had im sure they would have been more careful to make sure the bombs went off.
anyway why fly is right...if this kid went into the school with an axe he would still easily be able to kill quite a few defenseless young padawans by the time a teacher got to him. and its not like a teacher has a weapon nearby so they would need a couple of teachers to take him down. but without the pop of the gun the other teachers may not know whats happening and not know help is needed till its to late.

California Senator Dianne Feinstein will introduce a bill to an assault weapons.

America had an assault rifle ban which expired in2004.

Different States can have gun control, where I am at there is a 3-day waiting period to buy a pistol, references are required and the local police chief must sign off on anyone purchasing a pistol.

My neighbor had asked for my signature reference for the purchase of a pistol.
He's a self-employed contractor, owns a house, seemed stable, drug free, he had done work in our place an we were satisfied. He was friendly, stable, I would walk and feed his dog when he went away for vacation. Another friend was his employee in the Contractor business.
he used the gun to shoot himself, he died with money in the bank 3cars, big equity in his house. But he was alone......single, no kids, no partner

A mystery......I regret signing that form.

Too late to ban guns, but making bullets $5,000.00 each would definitely limit shooters to the rich nut jobs.

A little something to ponder, I grew up in a neighborhood where all males and many females over the age of 14 had at least one or more guns and there were no 'mass shootings' of note untill Charlie Whitman the infamus 'Eagle Scout' flipped out in the 'Texas Tower'. Now I live in Arizona where no permit is required to carry even concealed and the only major shooting we've had lately was clearly political.

What nobody seems to wish to consider is that what we are seeing is the coming of age of the 'no spanking generation'. In my generation we were raised by hand or by the belt and learned early on that our actions had consequences.
