Paulinho Paiakan, one of the best known indigenous defenders of the Amazon rainforest, has died of coronavirus.

Paiakan, who was around 65, was a chief of the Kayapo people.

He came to international attention in the 1980s in the fight against Brazil's Belo Monte hydroelectric project - the world's third largest dam.

In 1998, Paiakan was convicted of the rape of an 18-year-old. His wife was found guilty of assisting him in the attack.

His allies argue that the case was fabricated to tarnish his reputation and silence him

    Surprise Surprise

It Doesn’t Look Like the Protests Are Causing a COVID-19 Spike

When tens of thousands of people hit the streets protesting the police killing of George Floyd, many worried that the crowds—often too dense to allow the recommended 6 feet of social distancing—would spark a new wave of COVID-19 cases. Yet in New York, city and state officials tell me, there have been no spikes of the illness.

Nor have there been sudden surges in several other cities where large demonstrations were held, including Minneapolis, where Floyd was killed and the first protests erupted, and Philadelphia. Spikes have occurred elsewhere—especially Texas, Arizona, Florida, and California—but they coincided with the reopening of bars, restaurants, and other indoor establishments, making it hard to trace the upticks to the protests.

Do you seriously think that those out protesting are going to get tested? and if they are out SPREADING it without knowing? making it hard to trace the upticks to the protests.

Take a close look at the BLM protests....almost everyone is wearing a mask. Now take a look at pictures of recent “open it up” protests in State capitals by armed thugs, Republicans in Congress and of course the so called President....notice anything different?

So it doesn’t matter how many people get sick, just as long as they don’t die?

If you’re so concerned about the financial hardship COVID-19 is creating, how about the case of Janet Mendez who was sick for three weeks in the ICU,
and when she got home she was greeted with a bill from the hospital for $400,000 dollars.

The hospital claims she erroneously received a bill that should have gone directly to the government. Coronavirus patients, through a series of federal aid packages,
are supposed to be largely exempt from paying for the bulk of their care.

There will be tens of thousands of Janet Mendez out there, and tens of thousands more if you simply open everything up because it’s ok if they get sick
just as long as they don’t die.

Well, Fauci being wrong about everything isn't going to help with anti-"expert" bias

What do you think he is wrong about?

I have noticed even here on our site what could possibly be described as an anti-science sentiment. :)

Take your pick, face masks, modelling of cases numbers, air droplet transmission, reopening too early

Pick any video of him, it was usually points that were intentionally vague to start with or just down right wrong

A flashback, he for the most part never says anything specific, at one point here though, he talks about "successfully quaranting" infected and non infected people on the same plane coming back from the Diamond Princess. Which is as riduculous now as it should have been back then

The elderly population will be decimated

sorry for not replying. I didn't get a notification for this one.

Well, if he's lying then I see your point.

But doesn't it feel like even when the science has been properly done and there's no misrepresentation whatsoever people are still defying logic and ignoring social distancing? It seems to me there's a whole cross-section of people who have trouble standing in designated spaces - typically every time I go to Starbucks (coffee place) - and not wearing a mask unless told to do so. That's a crying shame if you ask me, and the reason we're seeing so much resurgence to accompany efforts to reopen.

So, I guess you're saying he's been inconsistent. I still believe him for some reason. I think he's trying to direct us toward a safer option, and that he may have used hyperbole, but I don't think his intention is malicious.

Malicious or not, I can see why you'd be frustrated. :)
