Since I haven't found a general thread about the ongoing presidential race in the US, I wanted to create this one. What do you think about the candidates? I'm just glad that Palin didn't try to run. Newt Gingrich should just shut up.
I hope this thread doesn't become overbearing with 5 people shouting that their all stooges. We all know that. I'm liberal, and I'm voting for Obama. Of the 4 republican candidates, all are duds, but they have their own special lack of charm. Mitt Romney isn't as much of a social conservative as he's pretending to be, which is a good thing from my point of view I guess, but it leaves me with the problem in which I don't know where he stands on anything. Rick Santorum is a nasty little man who hates puerto ricans and gays and thinks are biggest problem is porn. He seems to have less contempt for people than Romney though. I find that Newt Gingrich even has supporters is kinda insane. I mean Rick has the social conservatives, Mitt has the fiscal conservatives, Paul has the libertarians, and Newt has the idiots who like being promised cheap gas. Since I want this republican debacle to go on as long as possible, I really want him to stay in the race. Ron Paul is the libertarian wing of the republican party, and I fundamentally agree with him on more issues than any of the other republican candidates, but I think he has no sense of balance, and his policies like getting rid of the civil rights act and anti-EPA stance makes him the worst candidate.
It is entertaining to watch these GOP idiots until you stop and think one of these guys just might, on an outside chance, be the next President... Then it's scary as fuck all.
I hope that too. Republicans have done a lot of harm already lately (think women rights here) and the country cannot afford a Republican presidency, especially in these difficult economic times. Their solutions would be bad for the economy. The economy is not just about lowering taxes. Let alone the consequences for the rest of the world.
I can be upset with Obama. He needs to speed up Afghanistan's withdraw. I heard Obama say yesterday I think,"If we took the money we're spending on Iraq and Afghanistan, and used half that to pay of the debt and half that to invest in roads and schools and hospitals." I'm sitting here thinking yeah, why don't we have some sort of president to do that. I mean granted it will take months to get all our stuff out of Afghanistan, but Summer 2014? They don't want to us to be there and we don't want to be there. But fundamentally I see a military for the US that's just several large regiements of special forces and a strong air force and navy. We could cut military spending in half and keep R&D and the navy and air force at the same levels. It won't happen because defense contractors play such a large role in politics. I mean to some extent they are right, it will create less jobs if you cut military budgets, but if you turn that spending into spending that creates jobs at least temporarily, then you'll offset all of that. It's a lot cheaper to build schools than to blow up rebel strongholds halfway across the world. Which may turn out to be schools.
The silly part of me kinda wants Newt to win ....just so one of the most powerful men in the world is called Newt. hahahahaha.... The serious part of me might post tomorrow....
That's right, jobs created because of war are not meant to last anyway. It's always better to create jobs at home rather than in a war effort. The things he talked about also create an environment for more jobs, because education and good infrastructure make it easier. A more qualified workforce will then get higher wages, consume more and then entail more jobs, and so on.
